[SINGAPORE] TREASURE Unlocks The Hearts of Fans with Singlish and Amazing Stage Presence

The Singapore Indoor Stadium was adorned in sky blue Teu-lights on April 8 for K-pop sensation TREASURE’s concert HELLO. It was the group’s first performance in Singapore and the fifth stop of their 2023 tour!

The 10-member ensemble put on a jam-packed show for 6,000 Treasure Makers that flaunted lavish stage effects and a diverse repertoire fitting of the newest group hailing from YG Entertainment, a top South Korean record label which also houses BLACKPINK and WINNER

There Is Something For Everyone

Versatility is but a prerequisite for any K-pop act, but TREASURE takes this to the next level. The boys started the evening on a high note with powerful dance tracks JIKJIN, BOY, and I LOVE YOU accompanied by impeccable choreography to a sea of bopping Teu-lights (TREASURE’s official lightstick). Their solemn suit jackets were soon traded for loose-fitting pullovers and shirts as they presented their lighthearted pieces GOING CRAZY, COME TO ME, B.L.T, and CLAP! while sprinting towards the edges of the stage extension to interact with fans.

It was during the quieter ballads SLOWMOTION, IT’S OKAY, ORANGE, HOLD IT IN that the members got to show off some sentimental vocals. ORANGE was a particularly immersive experience as the boys ascended above the stage on a platform against a backdrop of sunset hues. Everyone danced along to the sweet anthemic DARARI, which went viral on TikTok last year and achieved global mainstream recognition.

The live band following TREASURE on tour was put to work harder for a mini rock segment. With great panache, Asahi and Haruto paired up for the bright pop-rock THANK YOU. Bursts of flames punctuated VolKno, a head-banging rap performance by Hyunsuk, Yoshi, and Haruto. After a brief rock intermission by the live band, TREASURE reappeared in full for a rock rendition of MMM, DARARI, RHYTHM TA and BANG BANG BANG, the latter two a tribute to senior YG groups iKON and BIGBANG.

TREASURE Is In Love With Singapore (for real)

The boys spared no opportunity to show their love for Singapore. For most of the members, it was their first time here, but for Hyunsuk who had previously visited on a family trip, it was an exciting return to the city. “I called my mum to brag to her about being in Singapore,” the leader and rapper chirped. “I really love Singapore! I want to live here with my parents, but I don’t have any money.”

Chilli crab is known to be intensely popular among visiting celebrities, and TREASURE is no exception. A few members expressed their love for the national dish, and Junghwan even sang “I love you Singapore chili crab” to the tune of YG senior BLACKPINK Jisoo’s Flower, along with a hilariously altered version of the dance to mimic the pincers of a crab. Having arrived in Singapore the day before the concert, the members did not have much time to explore the city yet, but Yoshi had already visited the Merlion and the Singapore Flyer. Kaya toast is now on the members’ must-eat list thanks to local food recommendations from the crowd.

To show that they had done their Singlish homework, the members prepared pick-up lines that packed a local punch specially for Singaporean fans. “Do you live in the east? Because when I see you my heart goes Bedok-Bedok (the name of a town in Singapore),” Doyoung said to the loudest of screams. Junkyu boldly declared that he was going to dabao (‘to take away food’) fans home that night, and while holding back giggles, Jihoon insisted, “I die die (Singlish intensifier) must go out with you today.” With a coy smile, Jeongwoo murmured, “Hey Chiobu (‘pretty girl’), ai stead mai? (to confess to someone in Singlish)” To put the cherry on top, Junghwan sweetly proposed, “My darling, BTO ai mai? (‘Would you like to buy a house together?’)” It goes without saying that fans were over the moon.

Haruto’s Birthday Bash & A Never-ending Encore

To ensure the evening was extra special for the members, fans prepared a birthday event for rapper Haruto, who had celebrated his 19th birthday just 4 days ago. Each fan was given a custom-made banner for the event, and a two-tiered cake with shimmery butterflies was wheeled out to the birthday boy’s surprise. “I didn’t expect to celebrate my birthday twice,” Haruto thanked the crowd. “I’ll grow up listening to nice things only.”

TREASURE is a boy group that treats their fans, lovingly nicknamed Teumes (short for TREASURE MAKER), exceptionally well. After the official end of the concert, the boys were back on stage for an encore medley of HELLO, GOING CRAZY, B.L.T, and ORANGE. We were prepared to leave the venue after the encore ended, but the gleaming sea of sky blue Teu-lights did not budge. Alas, the action was yet to be over. In just minutes, not only were the boys back for a second encore to perform MMM and THANK YOU, but they also spent a considerable amount of time getting off the stage to mingle with the audience in the standing pens, high-fiving Teumes and even snapping up a couple of selfies on their phones.

Through their first-ever tour, TREASURE promises a new generation of fans that the young blood of K-pop will represent the genre as well as their predecessors have. And given the satisfied sighs all around me that evening, it is for sure that Singaporean Teumes would be back for more.

We would like to thank Live Nation and One Production for the media invite!
