[MALAYSIA] MXM Talks About Music, Recent Collaboration as YDPP & More At Press Conference

This morning, rookie boy group MXM held a meet and greet with the press at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, ahead of their first “Match Up” Fan-meeting to be held at the HGH Convention Centre tomorrow evening.

Im Young Min and Kim Donghyun had already signed exclusive contracts with their label, Brand New Music, ahead of their stint on Produce 101. MXM was soon formed and by July 2017 they pre-released a single called “Good Day” ahead of their official debut in September later in the year.

Their debut single and music video “I’m The One” garnered a lot of attention and won them multiple nominations for Best New Artist at the end-of-year award shows, including ‘Gaon Chart Music’, ‘Golden Disc Music’, MelOn Music and Seoul Music Awards.

They followed up with their second EP with a comeback single entitled “Diamond Girl” in January, following up quickly with a double single in March for “Gone Cold” – the latter showcasing a new vibe, more sombre and smouldering than the cheerful concepts of before.

Despite this being their first time in Malaysia, the boys appeared calm and collected and handled questions with confidence and energy. When asked what kind of music they would like to try in the future, Donghyun replied that they have already tried funky and tropical sounds. Since their label, Brand New Music, is associated heavily with hip hop, they are interested in the band sound and hip hop as well. He cited Park Hyoshin and Crush as artists he would love to work with in the future, while Youngmin said he has always wanted an opportunity to work with Jay Park.

Asked whether they pay attention to their fans’ responses to their social media, they replied that they do – and that they receive fan letters on their fancafe as well! Youngmin particularly mentioned the warm welcome they received from Malaysian fans when they arrived the day before at the airport, and promised that they would show the best of themselves at the fan-meeting tomorrow evening.

Having recently collaborated with Produce 101 alumni Jeong Sewoon and Lee Kwanghyun (both from Starship Entertainment) on the project boy group YDPP (“Youth, Dream, Passion, Purity”), curiosity about whether they will collaborate again with them and/or their label-mates Park Woojin and Lee Daehwi in the future was met with the non-committal reply that any future work with any of them would be great!

It would be interesting to see what happens once the Wanna One project concludes, when Woojin and Daehwi return home to Brand New Music. In the meantime, fans can expect a great effort from the boys tomorrow evening when they finally meet!

Thank you to IME Malaysia and Warner Music Malaysia for the media invites! Fan-meeting tickets are still available for purchase. See you all tomorrow 🙂
