[FOOD REVIEW] EID Authentic Korean Cuisine Lives Up To Expectation

Looking for Halal Korean cuisine with classic flavours in Kuala Lumpur? EID Authentic Korean Restaurant will give you that original taste from Korea! With its original branch in Itaewon, South Korea being the first Halal-certified Korean restaurant by the Korean Muslim Federation, EID decided to bring their authentic flavour to Malaysia after they gained popularity amongst Malaysian tourists seeking Halal dishes in Seoul.

We visited the third branch in Malaysia, located at Damansara Perdana, Petaling Jaya, with two other branches located in Bandar Baru Bangi and Seremban. It is owned by a Korean-Muslim couple, Yoo Hyun Woo and Han Na Rae who are also known by their Muslim names, Saad bin Yusof and Han Nadia. They are responsible for all the Malaysian branches eventually getting Halal-certified.

Korean food enthusiasts in Malaysia may already be familiar with the name EID, as it has featured several times on local TV review shows such as TV3’s Jalan-Jalan Cari Makan, Borak Kopitiam and NONA. Throughout their five-years in Malaysia, EID has become recognized for their authentic taste and assuring customer loyalty by introducing new menus to satisfy local cravings.

Recently, EID announced their seasonal menu in celebration of Korean New Year (Seollal) which is known as Sliced Rice Cake Soup (Tteokguk) which we also managed to try. This menu will only be available until Saturday February 15, 2020.

Sliced Rice Cake Soup

Tteokguk or Sliced Rice Cake Soup is consumed during the New Year because it is believed to grant the person’s luck for the year and give them longevity. This dish is garnished with cooked eggs, marinated meat and seaweed. It is our first time trying this menu as it is rarely available in local Korean restaurants, especially the Halal ones.

The combination of juicy meat and seaweed is new for our tastebuds

The sliced boiled eggs add to the broth’s rich taste along with the surprising amount of meat. The soup is served in a large bowl which you could share with your whole family.

Cheesy Corn Sausage

Corndog lovers definitely need to take a bite of EID’s Cheesy Corn Sausage! We can safely say that it is one of the most satisfying corndogs we have ever had! The size is comparably huge and the thick, gooey, stretchy cheese as well as the crisp texture of the crust really complements the layer of cornmeal batter. The price is also reasonable for its quality. The corndog is drizzled with chili and mustard sauce and sprinkled with sugar on top for a perfect finish.

Original Bulgogi

The rich aroma of EID’s Original Bulgogi made with thin, succulent slices of beef marinated with soy sauce really enhances the taste, especially when eaten with a bowl of rice, and side dishes. The juicy meat left a vivid taste on the tongue, and the chewy texture made it immensely satisfying.

It is worth the price point by comparison as it was well-seasoned and generous in portion.

Loved every bit of it. Surprised by the amount of beef in the serving.

Cheese Tokpokki

EID’s Cheese Tokpokki is another recommended dish for cheese enthusiasts, as the rice cakes are smothered with cheese. The tokpokki left a huge impression on us as it is very chewy and tender . The savory sweet and spicy sauce thickened up pretty nicely.

Tastes better than normal the regular tokpokki, but I am a sucker for it so I love them both (regular and cheese). Tastes almost like authentic South Korean street tokpokki.

Dumpling Pancake

The pancake which is traditionally made with scallions and julienned vegetables arrived with plump, deep fried dumplings on top, and had a delicious seasoned soy sauce accompaniment. It seemed to be a crowd favourite!

The dumpling was scrumptious and crispy! The filling is proportionate to the size of the dumpling. The pancake is crispy yet soft at the same time without being too oily.

Yangnyeom Fried Chicken

The Yangnyeom Fried Chicken is sweet and spicy chicken drumettes and wings, smothered in sauce and garnished with crushed peanuts. This dish will satisfy fried chicken fans who prefer a less spicy, more sweet flavour to their chicken. We got more chicken than we expected, but we finished it with gusto!

Honey Dakgangjung

Last but not least, we tried EID’s Honey Dakgangjung which means Boneless Honey Fried Chicken. Crunchy pieces of boneless fried chicken drenched in original Korean honey soy sauce, it has a sweet yet salty, savoury flavour. The crushed peanuts on top echoes the traditional Dakgangjung, which add a nice bit of nutty texture and flavour.

The serving size is unexpectedly large and every bite is crunchy even though it was coated in sauce.

There are some vegetarian versus meat options for some dishes, as well as less or spicy options. Also available are other Korean staples such as Samgyetang (Ginseng Chicken Soup), Bibimbap (Mixed, Seasoned Rice with Meat and Vegetables), Ramyeon and popular snacks and side dishes.

The price points are good as the food compares to what you might expect to get in South Korea or in a more exclusive restaurant.

– Christina

Overall, it feels authentic and makes us think of South Korea. The ambience of the restaurant is modern yet still features homey touches. It is a nice place to chill with friends while munching over these meals – perhaps you might like to experience a little of South Korea right here at home? A big thumbs up!
