[FEATURE] TREASURE: Unraveling Their Vocal Gems

Whether you are a K-pop enthusiast or just a casual listener, you must have listened to songs released by YG Entertainment at least once in your life. This K-pop powerhouse is home to some of the best artists in the industry.

On August 7, 2020, the agency debuted their youngest group, TREASURE. They have won numerous Rookie of the Year awards and are frequently dubbed as one of K-pop’s 4th generation leaders. Consisting of 12 members in total, the group has many outstanding vocalists with unique singing styles who are worth paying attention to.

Let’s dig into some of their top-notch vocal performances!

MAKE UP

Make Up by Sam Kim is a song about someone asking their significant other to reconcile after a quarrel. Bang Yedam‘s delicate, yet powerful voice suits alt-R&B amazingly well, making it possible for him to convey the story this song tries to tell. Moreover, listening to this while having your eyes closed would make you feel as if he is actually singing right next to you.

HONESTY

Through this rendition of Honesty by Pink Sweat$, Yedam, who has been gathering praises ever since K-pop Star, once again proves that his voice is indeed noteworthy — he even received recognition from Pink Sweat$ himself. He plays with the melody throughout, and in the middle of the song, he adds a short melodic rap to offer a fresher approach to the ear, and it works! We never get tired listening to this.

LATCH

Junkyu is another member of the group who has an attractive voice. Thanks to his stylish singing style, he can easily pull off modern dance songs like Latch by Disclosure and Sam Smith. He is the type of singer who has such a distinguishable vocal, people can recognize it right away. One more thing about Junkyu that we found to be so appealing is his smooth falsettos, which you can listen to a lot in this cover.

STACK IT UP & SUPERSTAR

In addition to Yedam and Junkyu, the group has another top vocalist and his name is Park Jeongwoo. His vocals are incredibly versatile. Through the cover of Stack It Up by Liam Payne, you can listen to his powerful and youthful voice which perfectly fits TREASURE’s boyish image. Meanwhile on Superstar by Ruben Studdard, Jeongwoo shows a more soulful part of him where he also flaunts his vocal runs.

LAST DANCE

Yedam, Junkyu, and Jeongwoo are often called the “vocal trinity” by fans. The performance of Last Dance by BIGBANG during their debut survival show YG TREASURE BOX is the starting point. Each of them have different singing styles but combined, it is not awkward nor does it sound forced. Everything feels just right. Their vocals complete one another and that is what makes this stage so breathtaking. We have to say that this stage is so special and emotional, especially for those who watched the entire show.

WAYO

Not long before the group’s debut, Yedam released his first solo single WAYO. Through the cover of this song, Junkyu, Jeongwoo, Jihoon, and Mashiho, joined by Yedam himself, create a beautiful harmony and introduced to us their new charms.

Jihoon is one of the strongest vocalists in the group, who often belts high notes. His powerful high notes in the bridge is a personal favourite for many because it is undeniably satisfying.

What’s surprising about Jeongwoo in this live clip is how wide his vocal range is. In the first chorus, he harmonises with Yedam with his low notes, and in the outro, he easily hits the high notes.

Much like Junkyu, Mashiho’s vocals are an attention-grabber as people can easily distinguish it from the others. Although for those who are not yet familiar with his voice, it is sometimes quite challenging to differentiate his with Junkyu’s on the first listen if their parts are right after one another.

In an industry that is extremely competitive, they have proven their worth as vocalists and it is seemingly not enough to express how great they are just from these videos. But one thing for sure is that their vocals complement TREASURE, and only with TREASURE, they shine the brightest.

Treasure really has that vocal that you want to listen to everyday. Another addition to vocalist MASHIHO, he sang ‘FANTASY’ composed by his fellow member Asahi and it was a blast. The song was definitely made for his voice and shows the emotion in it. Although it wasn’t released by YG and still just a glimpse of it. It was definitely worth releasing as a solo album too. I mean there are songs that I just wish YG would release written and produced by this members.
