[FOOD REVIEW] Sweet Monster Returns With a New Outlet at Hillion Mall

UPDATE: As of 25th October 2017, we were informed by the management that the ice cream powder and local suppliers are Halal certified but Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS) has not officially authorised Sweet Monster as Halal.

Located in the heartlands, the newly-opened Sweet Monster outlet at Hillion Mall certainly did not fail to grab people’s attention on the very first day it started operating at the area. Known for its soft serve ice-cream filled with delicious popcorn, the brand had just undergone a management change in Singapore and revamped itself. There is the possibility of outlets being opened in the East as well, so keep an eye out for them!

If you’re up for a classic favourite, do try the store’s Popcorn Monster, which consists of milky soft serve ice-cream, topped with the popcorn of your choice. The ice-cream is made of 75% milk, while the popcorn is air-popped, made of non-GMO corn, and contains no artificial colouring! The Cheese and Caramel Mix was recommended and said to be a crowd favourite despite its dubious combination. Lo and behold, it did not disappoint! Scooping up a spoonful of caramel popcorn and ice-cream may be a little too sweet should your taste buds not be able to handle it… However, the right amount of saltiness from the cheese popcorn offsets the sugary sweetness of the caramel popcorn!

The Choco Monster, consisting of ice-cream topped with chocolate popcorn, is a delightful treat as well! The malty sweetness of the chocolate flavoured popcorn, together with the taste of milky ice-cream, will ensure that you will not be able to stop digging into the delicious dessert. Alternatively, you can choose to have your ice-cream served in a freshly-baked waffle cone instead.

Also, should you be needing a cup of Joe to wake yourself up, head over to Sweet Monster for a delicious cup of freshly brewed Cafe Latte. The store uses Brazilian double roasted coffee beans, and no sugar at all in their coffee-based drinks. Surprisingly, it was delicious and wasn’t too bitter despite the lack of sugar!

The Lemon Ade is probably the most refreshing item on the menu. The Lemon Ade has hints of lemon and lime, and is moderately sweet. If you’re expecting a surge of sourness to hit your tongue, don’t worry! This is the perfect drink to sustain you under the sweltering heat of the October sun. Get the Lemon Ade Float instead should you need the added milkiness of ice-cream to soothe your parched throat!

To combat a grumbling stomach, go for the desserts and wraps! The Thai green curry wrap does have a kick when it comes to its spiciness, though there could have been more fillings in the wrap itself. The tiramisu cakes we tried, the original and banana nutella flavoured ones, were light and not too decadent.

The best thing about Sweet Monster is that it offers healthier alternatives in its menu, from its desserts to drinks. As its tagline goes, “Life Is Hard, Enjoy Soft”. Come on down with your family and friends for a great and guilt-free time at Sweet Monster! 🙂
