Despite debuting to tough competition, STAYC has managed to carve out a space for themselves in K-pop with their retro sound and stunning visuals. The girl group, consisting of members Sieun, Sumin, Isa, Yoon, J and Seeun, was formed by producer duo Black Eyed Pilseung who are known for composing chart-toppers such as Twice’s TT and Sistar’s Touch My Body.
STAYC arrived in Singapore for the first time for their TeenFresh World Tour and performed at The Star Theatre on February 16, 2024.
FRESH PERFORMANCES
STAYC opened the concert with their debut track So Bad, and the crowd went wild as each member walked onto the stage. The intricate choreography and bright energy of the members created a vibrant atmosphere as fans loudly sang along.
The girls also performed their breakout hit Stereotype, with Sieun cheekily chiding, “Singapore, you better not have a stereotype!”
It was obvious from the first few songs that STAYC were skilled performers despite being relatively new on the K-pop scene. The girls had gained recognition on social media for their live vocals, unafraid to sing without lip-syncing – and at times even without any backing track.
Their hard work definitely paid off, as main vocalists Sieun and Yoon consistently belted high notes like it was nothing. Rapper J also had the chance to show off her deep voice in several songs, solidifying STAYC’s stable vocal line up. But their talents don’t stop there – vocalists also rap in songs like Teddy Bear and I Like It.
The girls also prepared a performance just for Singapore fans: a cover of It’s You by local singer-songwriter Sezairi. The ballad was the perfect serenade for SWITHs (their fandom name), and also allowed Seeun to especially beautifully showcase her vocals through the ad libs.
Isa said she had to hold back from posting about the song on social media, afraid of spoiling the surprise.
“I had heard this song many times even before we prepared it [for the concert],” she added.
Sieun also sang the song’s chorus acapella, and referenced the song’s lyrics in her message to fans. “My life is so full of joy and meaning because of you guys,” she said.
STAYC also performed their latest unreleased track Flexing On My Ex, which chronicles glowing up after a bitter break up. The girls sing about how their life is sunny as they practice self-care and go shopping, forgetting about the heartbreak.
SUNNY SINGAPORE
Even off stage, STAYC said they were excited to go shopping in sunny Singapore. Isa chose kaya toast as the local delicacy she was looking forward to trying, while Sieun craved chilli crab.
SWITHs suggested Marina Bay Sands and Universal Studios as some destinations for STAYC to visit, and the girls promised to head there after the concert.
Sure enough, they took a photo and even filmed a TikTok in front of the Sands Hotel which further delighted fans.
SWEET LOVE FOR FANS
STAYC also had the chance to connect with fans, speaking English as much as they could and reading the many placards fans had prepared.
Isa squealed with glee as she read a fan’s playful message to her, saying, “This date was supposed to be just the two of us, why did you invite so many people?”
Sumin also taught the audience some phrases she came up with: 행땅, short for 행복 많땅, or lots of happiness. She said the catchphrase described her night in Singapore perfectly.
The members added a modified version of the phrase, 감땅, which meant lots of thanks, as they were grateful to Singapore SWITHs for their infectious enthusiasm throughout the concert.
Even as the concert and the Asia leg of STAYC’s first world tour came to an end, the girls looked forward to returning to the country. Sieun said: “I’ll be back in Singapore as soon as possible!”
With that promise in mind, we wait for the next time we see them on our shores.
