Organised by CK Star Entertainment, Kyuhyun — Super Junior’s maknae and a ballad-master in his own right — performed at Singapore EXPO Hall 7 on March 30 at the first stop of his 2024 Kyuhun Restart Asia Tour outside of South Korea.
We have the scoop on what happened during the concert. Keep reading to discover all the details!
“Ho seh boh?” How are you?
After opening the concert with Restart and Dreaming, Kyuhun not only impressed fans with his pristine, all-white outfit but also his mastery of Hokkien. Amidst the thunderous applause, Kyuhyun took a moment to express his heartfelt gratitude to his dedicated fans — both KYUpiters and E.L.Fs — who had eagerly awaited for him to finally have his concert, which kicked off in Seoul on March 8.
Kyuhyun admitted that he was worried about having his solo concert. Despite his initial apprehensions, Kyuhyun’s nerves melted away as he gazed upon the sea of faces before him — fans who had travelled far and wide to attend his first-ever solo concert.
He then shared more about the first two songs he sang: Restart was from his latest EP released on January 9 while Dreaming was ideated and composed during the pandemic with the thought of one day being able to sing along with fans — a thought that was now a reality.
The show continued with swoonworthy renditions of A Million Pieces and Slow, Slowly, captivating the audience with Kyuhyun’s mesmerising vocals. These were then followed by acoustic performances of Was It Love? and Aewol-ri, during which his dulcet tones were accompanied solely by a keyboard and guitar. The reason for arranging the music that way was so fans could focus on the lyrics and be “reminded of your very own harsh goodbyes”.
Kyuhyun had a delightful surprise in store for his Mandarin-speaking fans as he treated them to a rendition of Eric Chou’s 你好不好 (How Have You Been?). Despite not having many opportunities to speak Mandarin, he initially harboured concerns about his proficiency in the language. However, those apprehensions proved unnecessary as he flawlessly executed the song, much to the delight of fans. He soon broke into the next song, Thanks to You (SUPER JUNIOR- K.R.Y.). Originally sung alongside his fellow Super Junior members, Ryeowook and Yesung, fans were encouraged to join and sing along.
Back in South Korea, Kyuhyun is more than just an idol and a crooner of ballads; he is also active in the South Korean musical scene. He introduced fans to the musicals he had starred in, starting from 2010’s The Three Musketeersand ending with 2023’s Ben-Hur. He thought that it would be great to introduce fans to a song from one of the musicals and so he did a vote. Ben-Hur’s Destiny emerged as the top choice with a total of 22.6% of the votes. Kyuhyun humorously remarked that the song was probably chosen because he removed his clothes during its performance in the musical. When he finally took to the stage to perform the chosen song, the raw performance not only showcased his musical talent but also solidified his reputation as an exceptionally skilled performer.
At the beginning of the concert, Kyuhyun expressed his concerns that fans seated in the back rows would not be able to enjoy the concert as they would feel left out. He had promised that he would take care of them by the concert’s end and after a quick change of clothes, he did! Kyuhyun ventured into the audience, engaging with fans while serenading them with Confession is Not Flashy. Upon returning to the stage, he seamlessly transitioned into a lively performance of Time with You and kept energies high with the tracks Flying, Deep in the Night and Together.
Fans were in for another surprise as Kyuhyun paid homage to Super Junior with a medley of their hits, Devil + Black Suit + Sorry Sorry. The crowd erupted into cheers as Kyuhyun dazzled them with his energetic performance, flawlessly executing the choreography and igniting nostalgia for the group’s iconic discography. But he did not stop there — he continued to captivate with his versatility by dancing to YAOSOBI’s IDOL.
As the concert started to wind down, fans sang along as Kyuhyun performed his repertoire of ballads: At Gwanghwamun, Daystar, Moving On and The Story Behind. He shared that performing ballads demanded more from him compared to performing dance tracks like Sorry, Sorry as he needed to pour his heart and soul into conveying the deep emotions of each song. But that did not mean he did not enjoy performing ballads at all!
To conclude the concert on a high note, Kyuhyun delivered encores, starting with a repeat performance of Restart and closing with Rainbow. During Restart, fans proudly brandished their blue Super Junior lightsticks and banners, each bearing the encouraging words: WE WILL BE WITH 규 (KYU). Expressing heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering support, Kyuhyun assured fans that he eagerly anticipated returning to Singapore for the 2024 Super Junior Super Show Spin-off: Halftime Asia Tour concert scheduled for July this year!
