When it comes to one of the most all-rounded artistes in the K-Pop industry, IU is extremely popular and well-loved by many for both her acting and singing skills. Dubbed as the “Nation’s Little Sister”, IU graced our little dot with her concert titled “Love, Poem” on Dec 6 and 7 at The Star Theatre. Due to her immense popularity, the theatre was packed to the brim with SINGAENAs on both days.
Opening her set with “unlucky”, IU’s immediate stage presence caused SINGAENAs to cheer her on, where she followed through with the acoustic version of “Palette”, which is undoubtedly one of her most popular songs. We would describe her whole discography as a palette of colors – be it upbeat or melancholy, IU was able to pull off her vocals with perfect pitch and sustaining vibrato. When it came to “BBIBBI”, SINGAENAs were invigorated by this hit of hers, and IU figured that “SINGAENAs must really love “BBIBBI”! During the first half of the set list, the singer performed her various singles and b-sides from her old albums, such as “Autumn Morning”, “Secret Garden”, and “Red Queen”.
With her latest hit, “Blueming”, SINGAENAs prepared a special present for her, whereby light-operated roses were given out to every fan, and was raised during the song, blooming up with a rainbow of colors. IU was extremely astonished by the fan-project, and called it “pretty”. The artiste also shared her own feelings about SINGAENAs, and said that Singapore is a “place of passion.” “During sad songs, people would usually clap slowly, but you guys would cheer loudly even after a sad song”, she posits.
Despite it being a one-man show, IU’s energy was relentless, and she went through the second half of the show with no hiccups. To keep the fans on the edge of their seats, IU told SINGAENAs that she had a present for them, and that it has to do with Jang Man Wol, her character from the hit drama series, “Hotel Del Luna”. She learnt that Singaporean fans really loved dramas a lot, and two days ago, she thought of an idea and prepared a special treat for the fans who were present. Although her hint clearly alluded to the singing of the OSTs of the drama, SINGAENAs were not prepared when the lights turned dim and videos of Jang Man Wol and Goo Chan Sung playing in the background, with the “Hotel Del Luna” feels hitting them at full force. With “Lean On Me” by 10cm, “All About You” by Taeyeon, “Remember You” by Gummy and last but not least, ”Happy Ending” by IU, her present of a “Hotel Del Luna” OST medley was extremely special and perfectly prepared. The actress shared that this moment was extremely special to her, as this was the first time in a long time singing a Gummy song, as she practiced Gummy’s songs a lot as a trainee, and Gummy is a role model that she can rely on and still look up to. She also mentioned that this was her first time singing “Happy Ending” at a concert, and she did not sing it even when Korean UAENAs requested for it during her past gigs. Lastly, she asked fans to remember Jang Man Wol, Goo Chan Sung and the characters of the “Hotel Del Luna”, and shared that she met them recently, but always miss them as they are like family. Thanks to IU, the fans were able to bring back their memories about “Hotel Del Luna”, and reminisce the special moments that happened in the wondrous drama.
As the last part of her set came to an end, IU wrapped up her show with songs including the likes of “Through the Night” and “You and I”. However, we know that most concerts come with an encore segment, and the singer did not fail to win the hearts of SINGAENAs with one of her most famous songs, “Good Day”. Despite singing a good 20 songs before “Good Day”, IU was able to hit the three high notes in the song perfectly without strain, and it truly felt like an award winning moment for the fans that were lucky enough to hear those notes live in real time. Closing off her set with “Love Poem”, the concert supposedly came to an end, but real UAENAs would know that IU concerts are special for a very compelling reason.
As fans started to walk out of the theatre, some of them were extremely confused when SINGAENAs were still rooted to their seats. A good three minutes later, IU returned on stage for her en-encore segment, which is known as the section where she takes fan requests from fans to sing certain songs. IU commented that she was surprised that there were fans who actually left, and laughed it off. To kick off the en-encore segment, it is tradition for the UAENAs to sing along to “Heart” with IU. For fan requests, the singer picked “Sleepless Rainy Night”, “The Night of the First Breakup”, and “Someday”, as the final songs of the night.
With the concert coming to an end for real this time, IU wanted SINGAENAs to promise that they will continue to live on despite their struggles and to meet her again next year. After spending a meaningful, exuberant and personal three hours and forty-five minutes with IU, SINGAENAs will remember this day that was one filled with passion and laughter that has great sentimental value.
We would like to thank iME Singapore for their generous media invite.
