Starting the year off right, Eric Nam is the first K-Pop act to grace our little red dot in 2020 with his “Before We Begin World Tour” on Jan 11. Held at The Pavilion, it was an intimate and sold-out show that was filled with thrilled members of the NamNation.
Phenomenal Setlist, Phenomenal Delivery
Yes – phenomenal is a word that can be used to describe Eric Nam’s discography, and his setlist consists of some of his best songs. Including the likes of “Congratulations”, “You’re Sexy I’m Sexy”, “Don’t Call Me”, “Runaway” and “Cave Me In”, listening to these songs in real-time truly gives you a much-needed ethereal experience that can be attributed to his live vocals. Be it ballads, R&B or even party songs, the concert had a fine mix of each genre, and NamNation were reactive with Eric’s gimmicks throughout the concert. However, great songs are propelled to the next level when the artiste is able to deliver them flawlessly, and Eric was able to match the fans’ energy through his bubbly personality and incredible talent – his vocals were stable although he spent half the set jumping from the left to the right side of the set. At one point, the singer even tried to step on the barrier in front of the fans, and that act itself exhibits his fondness for singing and performing. Despite being a soloist, he seemed to possess as much vigor and ebullience of an entire K-Pop group, and in my words, I now name him a man of extreme passion.
Dancing Machine
Although we have already established the fact that Eric has astounding live vocals (we strongly recommend you to watch him sing live), not many know that this man can dance – and very well too! His stage presence is unparalleled to no other, and his body rolls, in particular, are to be commended and looked out for. Armed with four back up dancers, the choreography of his songs were executed perfectly during his set, which led NamNation to feel a greater level of exhilaration that kept on growing throughout the show.
Not only does he dance, he opens up bottles and flings water at fans, giving them the full Eric Nam experience. As we have mentioned earlier, the singer truly goes all out during his concerts and lets loose. By doing so, his set felt like a private occasion just between him and his fans.
Witty Interactions with Fans
During the show, the singer interacted with the fans continously, which fed into the intimacy of his set. After starting his night off with “Come Through”, Eric spoke to Singapore NamNation, and asked the crowd if there were any moms and dads who accompanied their children to the concert, and a few moms acknowledged his question by waving at him. Other fans, however, called him “Dad”, and Eric rejected their stance by telling them, “I’m not your dad” in a joking manner. He definitely made the concert that much better by entertaining and responding to his fans’ humour!
When Eric asked the fans if anyone was underaged, a 14 year-old girl in the crowd raised up her hand, and Eric continuously teased her throughout the concert. He decided that he was going to keep his set PG as he did not want to be “kicked out from Singapore” as it would be too “scandalous”, before going against his word by doing a sexy body roll to the enjoyment of his fans. During “Potion”, he mentioned that the song was about drinking, and told the underaged girl that she would not be able to relate to the song.
Eric then called on the fans to find out if it was anyone’s birthday at the time of the concert, as he wanted to sing them a birthday song. Although there were several fans’ whose birthday was either looming or had just passed, Eric commented that “it did not count”, and ultimately chose three people to sing the birthday song to.
Through the singer’s interactions with his fans, it led to a plethora of comedic moments that were heartfelt and sincere, which led the night to be one that was filled with cheer and laughter.
