[SINGAPORE] DAY6 Tells The Story of Youth At Their ‘Forever Young’ World Tour

Boy band DAY6, comprising members Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil and Dowoon, made their way back to Singapore after five years. They were last in the island before the pandemic, where they brought their world tour Gravity to Singapore for the first time. DAY6 is not your ordinary boy band and even more so not your ordinary K-pop idols. Almost a fully self-composed group, their live bands and vocals are a strong boasting point as they sounded almost like how they do on a diskette. Apart from this, what truly sets them apart and out of industry norms is the way they wanted to tell the story of youth through their carefully crafted set list. From rock songs to emotional ballads, there were many moments from their gig which let us reminisce our youth, and while this article cannot do justice to the emotions we felt, we try to summarise the concert without losing the essence of it.

DAY6 kicked off the show with Best Part and the subsequent songs spoke of the joys of youth – it is meant to talk about how youth is exciting and heart throbbing. Bringing back older hits like Better Better and Time of Our Life, Young K invited fans to get up on their feet and sing along.

When the first part of the setlist ended with Say Wow, bassist Young K gave fans a snippet of what was to come. “We are walking through our youth. We’re not going to really talk about it much in detail, but you’re going to feel it through our setlist. What we hope at the end of this concert, that what you guys will take out is happiness.” Explaining that MY DAYs will find upbeat parts and emotional parts in the setlist, the next part of the setlist talks about the disappointment, heartbreak, let downs in relationships. And you can bet on DAY6 to do this exceptionally well.

Mainly from their older discography, they belted out powerful vocals to You Were Beautiful, I Loved You, Letting Go and Congratulations. These five songs bore resemblance to the five stages of grief – denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. DAY6 conveyed the emotions of holding on to everything in life, regardless of whether they were beautiful or not. They then closed the chapter of grief with the lyrics of Letting Go and Congratulations, finally accepting that there will be situations and relationships that cannot be salvaged and the only way to move on is by closing the chapter. Each and every high note and adlib was executed perfectly, and we could feel the grief tugging at our hearts. Their songs about heartbreak have never felt cheesy; instead they contained heartfelt lyrics that was relatable to the masses.

It was also heartwarming to see the members interacting with each other although they stood quite a distance apart due to the set-up of their instruments. The members especially enjoyed teasing maknae Dowoon several times throughout their talking segments, occasionally nudging for him to share the next song they will be singing and to speak in English. Dowoon is known to possess an adorable boy-next-door vibe, so whenever he spoke in English and especially when he struggled to pronounce Shiok!, MY DAYs couldn’t help but laugh at his adorable demeanour.

DAY6 also incorporated the feelings of hatred and anger into their setlist as fans screamed and shouted to songs like I Wait and Shoot Me. Hard on the drums, it also felt like a segment where MY DAYs could let out some steam. It was also at this point that we also realized that the timing of the concert was apt as it was on a Friday night, where most students and workers would have been jaded from a long week of studying and working.

Finally, the bittersweet moments of youth are summarized in the final part of their setlist. It was a segment of songs that discussed how difficult it is to grasp the concept of youth. With Happy, DAY6 expressed how there are fleeting moments of happiness, and times where you wonder if these moments will last and what being happy truly means. Moving on to Dance Dance, they also highlight that at the end of the day, it is how one makes their day worth it and despite turbulence and calamities, we should never forget to enjoy. It then ended off with a high as MY DAYs let their hair loose with Freely, a song that encourages one to break free and not to be bound by societal expectations.

DAY6’s discography explores concepts and emotions that are difficult to talk about, which is why their songs appeal to so many – the concert was sold out to a crowd of 5,000, with people from different races and age groups. Although they ended the night with Welcome to The Show, it felt like they were telling MY DAYs that this is but only the start for DAY6 and there is much more to come for this group. Still humming to the songs playing in the background when the show ended, MY DAYs were seen taking lots of pictures to remember this day. It was definitely a night that healed many, and a page of both DAY6 and MY DAYs’ beautiful youth written together.

We wish DAY6 all the best for the remaining stops of their tour and continued success in their future endeavours! Thank you to Live Nation for the invite to the concert!
