With various shows all year long, the musical scene thrives in South Korea. From hits such as “Mamma Mia!” and “The Lion King” to “Grease” and “School of Rock” there is absolutely something suitable for everyone to choose from.
The musical “Xcalibur” showcases the journey of King Arthur, exploring his discovery of new-found responsibility as a young leader and getting married to the love of his life, Guinevere only to experience a reality far from what was expected.
Produced by EMK Musical Company, who has brought in shows such as “Matahari”, “Phantom”, “Mozart”, “The Man Who Laughs” and “Marie Antoinette” (to name a few), “Xcalibur” takes pride in its star-studded line-up. With musical actor Kai, JYJ Xia Junsu and SEVENTEEN Dokyeom playing the role of King Arthur, it was interesting to see three different acting and singing methods from the leads.
We were in Seoul last month to catch the musical starring SEVENTEEN Dokyeom who made his highly anticipated musical debut in “Xcalibur” and boy, were we impressed!
Despite being a rookie in the musical scene, Dokyeom showed immense potential in both singing and acting. As this was his first ever acting showcase, we were impressed by his ability to express raw emotions of anger and sorrow; something that is considered challenging, especially for a newcomer. Even with his lack of experience, Dokyeom successfully commanded the stage and blended well with his co-stars in all of the different scenes throughout the three-hour show. And of course, it is only right that we mention how a-m-a-z-i-n-g the fighting scenes were! Even with a 20kg sword in hand, every motion seemed effortless for Dokyeom, further cementing his professionalism on stage.
What made the musical even more memorable was Dokyeom’s little adlibs which added more flavour making it his own version of King Arthur. The entire production also deserves praise for the stage set-ups which were marvellously decorated and shifted around quickly and effortlessly as the scenes progressed. The wedding scene was one of our favourites as it was magical and beautiful, almost like a fairy-tale come true!
It was definitely a successful debut for SEVENTEEN Dokyeom in the musical scene but of course, there is always room for improvement as he progresses and takes more control of his vocal stabilisation. We believe with the experience he had gathered as the lead role in “Xcalibur”, Dokyeom will soar to greater heights with more opportunities in the future. Having tackled such a physically demanding musical, we are excited to see more of what Dokyeom is capable of!
