Onew, leader of one of K-pop’s pioneer groups SHINee, met his Filipino fans for the first time last July 4, 2024 at the New Frontier Theater in Quezon City.
The idol-turned actor said that it was his first time to prepare a fan meeting that is like a world tour. Manila is the fifth stop of GUESS: Onew Fan Meeting 2024. He also shared that the fan meeting was titled like so because he wants his fans to keep guessing what he is going to do next as he has a lot of things in store for them in the future.
Onew kicked off the event with a heartfelt performance of Circle, the title track of his first Korean studio album of the same name. This was immediately followed by Sign which was a sweet ballad about the uneasiness that comes with starting to like someone.
“I’ll try my best to give good influence and good memories to you guys,” Onew said when greeting the Filipino Jinggus (his fandom name) for the first time. He also expressed his admiration for the fans’ energy saying, “Your energy is just amazing. I’m getting surprised every time.”
Aside from the performances, fans were also able to witness Onew’s charming and funny personality through the several segments of the fan meeting.
Guess Recent Photo
For the first segment, several pictures were shown on the screen and Onew shared short anecdotes about them. One of which was a photo taken during his recent rehearsal for a music festival in Seoul. He said that it was his first time to perform alone at an event like that.
Guess Favorite Song
Onew sang Harry Styles’ As It Was, and the crowd was pleasantly surprised to hear the singer’s cover. But more so for the long-time Shawols (SHINee’s fandom name), when he sang a snippet of one of SHINee’s classics, Love Like Oxygen
Guess Onew’s Style
The fans got to know Onew’s fashion and music preferences in this segment. He was asked to choose among different fashion styles he had donned in the past. Among the options, he caved in to the crowd’s choice which was him wearing a scrub suit and a doctor’s gown during his filming of the hit K-Drama, Descendants of the Sun.
Guess Who I Am
This segment was not just for Onew, but for his friend and guitarist, Zairo, as well. They played several games like cup stacking, and “find the mic” to mention a few. For the last game, Onew had to do a famous dance challenge on social media nowadays which was TWICE’s Look At Me. At first, Onew struggled to copy the dance because the video and music was played twice its normal speed. But Onew being the sunshine that he is, tried to play it off and dance what he can for his fans.
I’m a Painter
Onew was tasked to draw two of the famous tourist spots or landscapes in the Philippines namely, The Chocolate Hills in Bohol, and The Banaue Rice Terraces in Banaue. He was given a minute to draw each scenery. Onew was amazed about the rice terraces and quipped, “As long as these rice terraces exist, my love for you will stay.”
Although the paintings did not look close to the photos, Onew did his best and joked that he’s a singer, not a painter after all. He ended up signing the paintings which were later on raffled off to two lucky Jinggus.
Guess About Onew
This was an interactive game that involved the entire audience. Several personal questions about Onew were flashed on the screen and the crowd will choose between “O” if they agree to the statement/think it’s correct, or “X” if otherwise. If a fan answered incorrectly, they had to sit down. The fans who remained standing until the last question received a small gift from Onew.
As the show drew to a close, Onew said that he is grateful for the love and loyalty of his Filipino fans, and that he waited for this moment as much as they did. “I will make sure that this energy I received from you, I will use it for good purposes.”
“I’m excited to have had my first solo performance here in the Philippines and to have created a passionate stage with so many fans. I hope to visit the Philippines more often in the future and enjoy more moments like this together. Thank you,” said Onew.
For the show’s encore, Onew prepared a special performance of an unreleased song. The crowd jammed to the song, and even did fanchants.
