The hot and humid night didn’t stop Filipino JWalkerz from flocking to the New Frontier Theater on September 22, 2019 to spend an even hotter night with Jay Park at the Manila leg of his ‘SEXY 4EVA’ Tour!
AOMG’s DJ Wegun kicked off the concert by setting the vibe with electric mixes that pumped everyone up and got them light on their feet. The crowd’s energy rose even higher when Jay finally appeared on stage and started his jam-packed setlist with ‘Forget About Tomorrow’, a sleek track created in collaboration with LA-based producer, Yultron.
The dance party continued on with crowd favorites ‘Me Like Yuh’, ‘Solo’, and ‘Iffy’. In the talk segment that followed, Jay thanked his Filipino JWalkerz for coming out to see him at his first solo concert in Manila. He promised everyone that they would make nothing but great memories for the night, and then sang ‘좋아 (JOAH)’ next to show just how much he adores his fans.
Jay got the crowd swooning as he performed ‘Drive’, ‘V’, ‘All I Wanna Do’, and ‘Feng Shui’, during which everyone whipped out their phone flashlights customized to give off red, yellow, and blue lights to resemble the colors of the Philippine flag. Jay took notice of it right away and praised his fans’ creativity, calling the fan project “dope”.
The show swerved into a more sentimental turn when Jay slowed down with soulful tracks ‘The Truth Is’ and ‘Stay With Me’, reminding everyone once again why he has been at the forefront of the K-R&B scene for as long as anyone can remember. Jay then took the crowd on a trip down memory lane as he performed ‘Abandoned’ and ‘Know Your Name’.
HAON from H1GHR Music took over the reins and dropped some serious bars with ‘Noah’, ‘Bar Code’, and ‘BwB’. The 19 year-old can be easily mistaken for a veteran with his rapid-fire rapping, and that only goes to show that the future of K-hiphop is in very capable hands with the likes of HAON spearheading the next generation of Korean rappers.
The hiphop showdown waged on when Jay returned on stage to perform ‘Finish Line’, ‘On It’, and ‘Worldwide’. He then got everyone lit off ‘Soju’ before taking the crowd right into ‘K-TOWN’, not once missing a beat even as he transitioned to a more mellow rhythm with ‘You Know’.
Manila has always been known for being notoriously hot, but Jay straight up set the stage on fire when he showed off his toned upper body inked with tattoos as he sang ‘Mommae’. Before proceeding onto the next song, Jay surprised the audience when he requested that everyone including those on the second floor of the theater to come down to the front as he wanted to get more personal with his Filipino JWalkerz. He admitted that the show almost did not happen due to certain circumstances, but he really fought for it to push through because of how much it means to him to perform in front of his Filipino fans.
Jay then performed ‘SEXY 4EVA’ which inspired the title of his first-ever world tour as a solo act, touching everyone’s hearts when he changed the lyrics to “Manila is SEXY 4EVA.” HAON returned on stage to flex his chemistry with Jay as they sang ‘All Day’, ‘Giddy Up’, and ‘Water’ before finally capping off the night with ‘니가 알던 내가 아냐 (Who You)’.
Jay Park has quite a history with the Philippines — although ‘SEXY 4EVA’ is his first solo concert in the country, it also marks the fifth time he has visited the Pearl of the Orient. He consecutively visited Manila in 2010, 2011, and 2012 for a fanmeet together with AOM, a performance at the MTV EXIT concert, and a promotion tour for his first studio album <New Breed>, respectively. He then returned in 2017 as a special guest at an exclusive event held in Taguig City.
It’s safe to say that the familiarity Jay has established with Filipino JWalkerz is as strong as ever even after almost a decade since he first came to greet them, and that’s what made ‘SEXY 4EVA’ in Manila feel intimate in more ways than one.
The Seoul Story would like to thank Onion Production for the media invite and for allowing us to be part of such a lit night! We hope to see Jay Park in Manila again real soon! 🙂
