Lovingly called by his fans as Hwang-jae (which means ’emperor’ and a pun on his last name), Min Hyun proved why he still reigns over the hearts of fans during his concert at the New Frontier Theater last October 8, 2023!
The idol-turned-actor returned to Manila four years since his last visit with his former group NU’EST for their Segno Tour in 2019. Since then, he had several solo activities including his infamous role as the genius and kind mage prince Seo Yul in the hit Netflix drama Alchemy of Souls.
Min Hyun opened the concert with Hidden Side, the title track of his first solo EP Truth or Lie. This performance proved that despite being more active as an actor these days, Min Hyun is still very much the all-rounder idol his fans know him to be with his flawless vocals and sleek dance moves.
From crooning ballads like Honest and Earphones to pop songs like Crossword, Cube, and Perfect Type, the show’s setlist perfectly showcased Min Hyun’s versatility and to which his fans enthusiastically sang along to the idol’s delight, “I was surprised because all of the Hwangdos were singing along with me.”
The mini concert also included fun games and question-and-answer segment in between performances which let us get to know Min Hyun better. In one game, Min Hyun was tasked to complete a missing line from the script in a drama he starred in.
The actor unfortunately failed to reenact the scene and quipped, “I realized my memory was not that good,” which earned laughter from the crowd. As penalty for losing, he had to pose for Hwangdos wearing a variety of headbands – a bunny, an angel, and the Sanrio character ‘pompompurin’.
There was also the Music Album Season 2 segment where Min Hyun acted as a radio DJ who gives love advice. A letter sender named Yul consulted a love dilemma he has been having about a girl that reminds him of his first love. As Min Hyun was giving advice and sentiments, he also sang songs just like how an actual radio DJ would play songs on air dedicated to the letter sender.
The show was concluded with a short but sweet video fan project from Filipino Hwangdos which showed Min Hyun’s journey to being a NU’EST member, to him joining and winning the survival show Produce 101, to being the soloist and actor that he is today.
“Even if you guys are far away, you always continue to support me and it really keeps me going and gives me the energy to stand up whenever I feel like I’m facing difficulties. Thank you so much. I won’t forget all your love and support,” he shared.
We are always cheering for Hwang Min Hyun’s projects and activities, and we are hoping to see more of him again here in Manila in the future!
