[PHILIPPINES] Dreamcatcher Discusses Their Sound, Bonding Activities, and More at Media Conference

Before their Under the Moonlight concert, South Korean girl group Dreamcatcher sat down with members of the press and a select few fans at an exclusive media conference on August 27, 2023. The conference took place at the Seda Vertis North Hotel in Quezon City.

During this session, the members of the group touched on various topics. They expressed their feelings about returning to Manila after four years, their perspectives on gaining global recognition, the activities they do to bond, and more!

JiU, the leader of the group, conveyed their excitement about being back in the Philippines. It had been a considerable amount of time since they last visited Manila and reunited with their Filipino InSomnias. Their previous visit was on March 24, 2019, when they held their first concert in the Philippines, Invitation from Nightmare City, at the SM North EDSA Skydome.

Dreamcatcher stands out in the South Korean music scene — which is largely dominated by pop, dance, and electronic genres — due to their distinctive rock and metal sound.

In response to a question about whether their unique musical style aligned with their personal tastes, Siyeon replied, “All of our members have different preferences, but I personally love the rock and metal genre. And as an artist that makes a similar type of music, it’s very exciting. It makes me happy.”

Breaking into the international scene as a K-Pop artist deviating from the norm is challenging, yet Dreamcatcher has managed to do well for themselves. Just the previous month, the girl group announced their 2023 World Tour [Apocalypse: From Us], commencing on September 3 in Montreal City, Québec, Canada.

Yoohyeon admitted that the global attention they have garnered still feels surreal at times. She noted, “Since Korea is quite far from the global audience, it’s hard to believe that we have fans all over the world. When we tour, we get to see our other [international] fans and hear them cheer for us, and only then do I realise how many people support us outside of Korea.”

The members also shared how the group manages to stay strong over the years. Yoohyeon attributed their long-standing friendship to strong teamwork, while Siyeon emphasised the significance of loving the music they make.

Regarding their bonding activities, Dami mentioned that their time together mainly involves casual conversations about even the smallest topics. Additionally, Siyeon revealed that she and Yoohyeon often connect over meals. Siyeon explained, “I like eating multiple [kinds of] food at the same time, and Yoohyeon eats with me most of the time. Being with her boosts my appetite and makes me eat a lot more.”

Adding to what Siyeon said, Handong expressed that eating is a “very big happiness” in her life, too. She commented, “When we’re busy [with group schedules] and our members don’t eat well and miss meals, I gather everyone and encourage them to eat because I believe that food is an important aspect of life.”

When asked about the most active member, the girls pointed out that the maknae Gahyeon loves working out the most. Gahyeon revealed, “I like doing pilates. I think having a good posture is important, so I like doing that exercise.”

Dami added that during their downtime without group schedules, she tries to make time for her personal trainer as frequently as possible.

As their reunion with Filipino InSomnias had been long overdue, Yoohyeon shared her apprehension about the upcoming concert. She confessed, “To be honest, I’m very nervous. Before we arrived here in Manila, I didn’t think much about the concert. But now, seeing InSomnias during the press conference, my nerves finally surfaced.”

To ease some of their anxiety, the girls were taught some fun and useful Tagalog phrases, such as mahal ko kayo (“I love you all”), salamat po (“thank you”), paalam (“goodbye”), kita kits (slang for “see you later”), akin ka (“you’re mine”), and maganda ba ako? (“Am I beautiful?”).

SuA particularly enjoyed saying “akin ka”, complete with amusing hand gestures. 😂

Concluding the media conference, SuA conveyed a brief message to their fans ahead of the concert: “It’s been a really long time since we were last here in the Philippines and met with our Filipino InSomnias. Through this concert, we hope to satisfy their longing for us.”

The press conference concluded with the girls posing for photos with the lucky fans selected to attend, as well as with the present media representatives.
