[MALAYSIA] The Largest South East Asia Music and Street Dance Festival, MELOSAGA

The largest South East Asia Street Dance and Music Festival, MELOSAGA commenced in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, January 15, 2023. Read on as we recap what went on during the festival!

Dance, Fantastic Baby!

The festival opened its doors at 9AM local time, where it started with the first competition of the day, SDACA Mega Crew, in which the winner of the competition stood a chance to win MYR 5,000! The event then continued with the next competition, which was the RF JAM Qualifier, where the winning team will be given the opportunity to participate in a dance competition in Vietnam.

MELOSAGA also held YG Auditions that ran throughout the day. The venue was filled with passionate young dancers practising for the audition.

YGX Showed Off Their Skills During Their Dance Workshop

On the other side of the venue, there was an evident sound of cheerings coming from the crowd as YGX’s Jihyo, Yeon Jin and Mood Dok shared their dance skills with the audience in an exclusive YGX dance workshop. For the workshop, those who wanted to participate would need to purchase tickets and they could pick who’s session they would like to join. During the workshop session, each member showcased their unique personality through their dances with a variety of different moves that the participants could learn.

The dance workshop began with YGX’s Jihyo, where she taught the crowd her amazing choreography. She used this session to teach the participants her choreography for a pop song. The dance included moves that were all very eye-catching and technical but it was surprising to see how quick the crowd could follow along. The workshop then continued with YGX’s Yeon Jin and Mood Dok, where both dancers also opted for non-idol choreography. Yeon Jin mentioned that the choreography that she taught the crowd was one of her favourite choreographies to teach to her students.

This was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity for the students as YGX’s workshops are usually only conducted in South Korea making this as the first time their workshop is held in Malaysia. All the techniques and skills that were taught by the trio were not taken for granted by the participants. The workshop lasted for about 4 hours and even though it was a long day, it was evident that the students of the workshop enjoyed every bit of it. They also had the opportunity to showcase their skills and film their dancing videos with the esteemed dancers.

A Wild Night of Music and Dance

After a long day of dancing, the festival ended its day with a concert where they had local act, DOLLA, along with YGX’s Jihyo, Yeonjin and Mood Dok, as well as DJ Raiden, taking over the stage with their show-stopping performances. The concert began with DOLLA’s performance, where the group performed their hit songs and surprised the crowd with their dance cover of BIBI’s latest song, BIBI Vengeance. The concert was then followed by an eye-catching performance of synchronised choreography by YGX. The trio performed to a number of hits such as Blackpink’s LISA’s Moneyand Beyonce’s Run The World (Girls).

Both YGX’s Yeon Jin and Jihyo mentioned that this is not their first time in Malaysia and every time they come here, their must have food is Nasi Lemak at Village Park, Damansara Utama, and Roti Tissue at the mamak. For first-timer Mood Dok, he mentioned that he really enjoyed the crab soup that he had the night before and also the lychee juice.

The trio was also asked about their experience joining Mnet’s Street Women Fighter and Mnet’s Street Man Fighter. Yeon Jin mentioned that after joining the show, she improved a lot on her skills and the experience changed her life as a dancer. Jihyo also shared that a lot of people finally recognised her dancing skills after the show was aired, and due to this she could not help but to express her gratitude for the show. Meanwhile for Mood Dok, he said that he was really happy to be given the chance to perform in Malaysia.

The show then moved on with the final act of the day which was DJ Raiden’s set. During his set, he played a number of songs from SM artists such as EXO’s Growl, Aespa’s Illusion and Savage, NCT 127’s Sticker and Taemin’s Move. The crowd was hyped up throughout his whole set by dancing, jumping, singing along to the tunes.

DJ Raiden also took this chance to play some of his own songs such as Yours, a song where he featured Chanyeol from EXO, Lee Hi and Changmo. His set also included a number of other K-Pop hits such as (G)I-DLE’s TOMBOY, Zico’s New Things and BTS’ Dynamite. He finally ended his performance with a remix of EXO’s latest song, Don’t Fight The Feeling.

In short, the MELOSAGA Street Dance and Music Festival was definitely one for the books. The day was filled with star-studded performances, amazing dancing and good vibes all around. It was truly an eye-opening experience where we could witness how the crowd unites under music and dance.
