[MALAYSIA] ONCEs Light Up for TWICE in Kuala Lumpur

It was a long time coming – after the last-minute cancellation of their concert last year, TWICE were back in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday, 17th August, to make good on their promise to return. And make good they did, satisfying ONCEs’ hearts with a heart-shaking show that did more than just entertain.

The show began with a video showing a mysterious woman wearing a crystal mask approaching each of the members in what looked like a modern-day noir abandoned gaming arcade. As colour slowly seeped into their world, they come into contact with the woman. TWICE then begin to gain substance and strut towards the camera with strength and attitude.

The Colour of Love
The emotional reaction upon seeing Mina’s face in the video was pure – ONCEs love for her is undeniable! Having taken a break from touring due to mental health issues, her absence left a void which ONCEs felt keenly that night.

Giant screens of the members lit up as they appeared on stage dressed in sleek black leggings and short sassy black tailcoats. The crowd went wild upon seeing TWICE! After a beat, they went into the stomping “Stuck In My Head” before continuing with their massive hit “Cheer Up”.

After a brief introduction the members brought out hit after hit, laying it up first with “Touch Down”, “BDZ (Bulldozer)”, “Yes Or Yes”, their cover of The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back” and the tropical club dance hit “Dance The Night Away”. One can imagine the myriad rainbow colours of the Candy Bong in the crowd as they sang along and marvelled at the strength of the girls doing their choreography! It is worth noting that their live vocals were amazing considering some of the choreography they had to do during their live mics.

They took the energy down smoothly into the gentle “After Moon” after returning to stage dressed in soft white gowns resplendent with glitter and crystals. When they took a break to chat with ONCEs, Dahyun brought Mina into the picture by saying how one of the songs reminded her of Mina’s colours. The collective sighs and cries of sadness from the audience were loud and clear at the mention of Mina. To brighten the mood, Dahyun asked ONCEs to hold up their Candy Bongs to show their colours too!

Red is the Colour of Hot! Hot! Hot!
TWICE continued with “You In My Heart” and the slightly funkier “Sunset”, taking the opportunity to interact with the crowd. They then performed a gentle version of “Heart Shaker”, before exiting to change and return dressed in red-hot outfits to continue the song with the full energy and verve it inspires!

The sexily restrained “Strawberry” from their last album is testament to the maturing image they have cultured during their last comeback, one which takes the strength and energy of their cheerful and sassy earlier concepts and blends them seductively with a more aware, self-confident TWICE. They rounded off with the more upbeat “Woohoo”.

At this point they split into groups to perform, starting with “Dance For You” the dance of a woman who knows what she wants, performed by Tzuyu, Dahyun and Sana, who show off their sexy side with confidence and charisma. Next, Momo and Jihyo, dressed in slinky blue outfits, use their powerful bodies and dance moves to portray the strength in saying “Goodbye”. Finally, Jeongyeon, Nayeon and Chaeyoung dance to Lady Gaga’s anthem to self-confidence, “Born This Way”.

Pink is the Colour of Love

TWICE emerged sitting on a large holographic set dressed in varying shades of pink surrounded by the holographic, prismatic colours of the rainbow. They performed “Likey” with Momo’s self-choreographed dance solo break eliciting cheers from the crowd! They followed this with “What Is Love” before taking another break to talk to ONCEs again.

Dahyun spoke in English to say that their next song is their debut song, and ONCEs went crazy. “You know?” she asks, and when they cheer “Yes” loudly, she says, “Oh, you are smart!” making everyone laugh.

When “Like OOH-AHH” started playing, ONCEs started cheering excitedly! TWICE then continued with “TT”, before reaching the climax of the evening with their latest smash hit “Fancy”. The song diverted into an awesome high energy, marching-band dance break, and the stadium was pounding!

They exited and an interactive game started to play on screen where ONCEs were singled out in the crowd and put on camera – and Malaysian ONCEs are an attractive and cheeky bunch!

The Colours of TWICE

They return to stage, this time in metallic pink cheer skirts to sing “Signal” and to watch a special VCR made by Malaysia ONCEs. Although the video was fun, there was a sombre mood as the connection between ONCEs and TWICE became emotional.

The girls took a few moments to individually express their personal gratitude to ONCEs. Jihyo recalled the moment she found out their show last year was cancelled. As the girls continued, ONCEs realised they were all saying something meaningful to them in Malay after they finished. When it came to Dahyun, she was already emotional. She loved seeing the happiness on ONCEs faces as they perform, and regretted that Mina could not attend the concert with them. She could not continue and Sana consoled her as she gathered her composure while ONCEs chanted “Don’t cry!” as one.

Chaeyoung said she hoped they have given back the energy they have received from ONCEs. Nayeon said she is grateful that she has been able to make good on their promise to return. Tzuyu, after thanking ONCEs, asked if she could say something in Chinese for their Chinese friends – to which ONCEs cried “Yes!”

She spoke her native language, and finally said “I love you” in three different languages! Jeongyeon ended their heartfelt goodbyes with gratitude towards ONCEs who have waited for them for so long.

Finally, they sang “Knock Knock” while walking around the stage and waving and interacting with the audience under a rain of pretty confetti. When they finally bowed to leave the stage, ONCEs cheered loudly. TWICE then performed their encore with “Stuck”, a pretty song that showcases their silvery and powerful vocals and that left everyone feeling good!
