[MALAYSIA] MXM Charms The Crowd at ‘MATCH UP’ Fanmeeting in Kuala Lumpur

On a rainy Tuesday night at the HGH Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian fans of MXM turned up to ‘MATCH UP’ with Im Young Min and Kim Dong Hyun at their first fanmeet in Malaysia.

The first thing to notice about this duo is how confident and charming they are on stage. Perhaps this is a result of their training and experience, or perhaps it comes from an understandable self-confidence a several-month-old group might have, having signed and debuted not long after their stint on Produce 101, under their label Brand New Music!

Led by the cheerful emcee of the night, the boys played a seemingly endless elimination quiz game with the fans, drew “charming” portraits of each other and obliged requests for sexy dance demos and aegyo with ease.

The next thing to notice is the strong elements of hip-hop and RnB in their songs, presumably the influence of their label Brand New Music, which is known for its hip-hop and rap artists.

Whilst MXM’s pre-debut and debut singles “Good Day” and “I’m The One” were decidedly pop, their follow up single “Diamond Girl” takes a turn down the 80s road, with clean pop synth sounds and funky bass. Throughout the night, we got a taster of the range of music the duo has, from the disco dynamism of “Perfectly Perfect” with its thwacking acid jazz bass, to the steamier “Just Come Out”, lightly pulsating with RnB and hip-hop sounds.

Their latest single, “Gone Cold” was more sombre, a little more mature. All these songs released within the space of a few months since debut perhaps signals a desire to showcase both the range of musical styles of the songs, and their commercial viability. With a duo such as MXM, whose smooth vocals and rap have proven able to carry many genres, it seems to be working well!

Brand New Music’s CEO Rhymer was present to support the boys during their fanmeet – who knows what the future might bring?

Thank you to IME Malaysia and Warner Music Malaysia for the invites! 🙂
