In an almost three-hour long concert last Saturday, GFRIEND performed almost thirty of their songs, presented various clips and stories on VT, and basically had a high-energy afternoon with their BUDDYs on the KL leg of their GFRIEND ASIA TOUR.
The evening started early with a cute, action-movie-style VT showing the girls gathering together for the show, and then they were on! Dressed in pastel-coloured outfits and dancing to “Me Gustas Tu”. They followed with “Life Is A Party” and “Vacation”, setting the scene for a cheerful and energetic starter to their show.
Pastels and Personalities
A quick chat reveals that the girls are a cheery, energetic and humorous bunch, with a flirtatious and sassy vibe too. This is also reflected in the video clips that was shown throughout the concert, which gave the whole night a wholesome and dynamic energy, much like their music and dance.
A series of love songs showcasing their vocals ensued, starting with “Glow”, and following with the candy-sweet,“True Love” and lastly, “Love In The Air”.
Another clip showed the members’ heartfelt wishes for themselves and BUDDYs, before they returned to the stage with another major hit, “Love Whisper”, and then “Windy Windy”. They ended the set with “You’re My Star” and “A Starry Sky”, waving and singing to the crowd, before leaving for a break.
Fun and Possibilities
A very entertaining video with a “what if?” storyline on how they were formed, but how they could have ended up being two separate groups, was shown – and the spoof is genuinely funny! Eunha, Umji and YeRin presented a special stage as the sub unit Hug Hug, with a cute but hard-hitting dance number called “Shy Boy”. SoWon, SinB and Yuju came out as the group World Peace, presenting a J-pop style number called “Monday Blues”.
They followed with another video where each member plays out a spoof of the Avengers – where they compete in a survival-of-the-fittest game show situation. All in good fun of course!
Time to Get Serious
They return with one of this year’s offerings, “You’re Not Alone”, “Only You” and “L.U.V” – songs which showed a more sombre, mature side to which they commented, made them emotional as they performed. Riding on the atmosphere, the girls proceeded to sing the ballad version of “Rough”, where their clear and powerful voices could be heard all over the auditorium.
Another chat revealed their cute enthusiasm as Eunha attempted to speak in Malay, saying “Seronok tak?” (“are you having fun?”) – but it took her several tries before she got the intonation right and confusing everyone present.
They continued with “Flower Garden”, “Sunrise” and “Time For the Moon Night” – the latter which the crowd went crazy for. After changing their clothes – their third for the night, they returned with “Memoria”, “Flower” and “Crush” – before launching into their immediately recognizable hit “Fingertip”.
“Navillera” followed and the crowd was elated as they finally witnessed GFRIEND performing their favourite songs!
Forever Friends
A final VT showed how all the members contributed to their own lyrics for “Hope”, before they returned for their final stage to sing it in earnest for BUDDYs. As they sing “Love Bug”, they walked around the stage with selfie cams, complete with cute filters, that was displayed on the huge screens behind them. Finally, they end the night with a promise to do their best to match BUDDYs love in the future, and finished with “Compass”.
It really did feel like spending the afternoon with a bunch of girlfriends – fun, dreamy and invigorating, with a whole lot of love.
We would like to thank the organisers Macpiepro and Mcalls for letting us share the experience with you.
