[MALAYSIA] Dept Mesmerizes Malaysia Fans At His Solo Concert

South Korean R&B indie singer-songwriter and producer Dept has made his way to Malaysia for his first solo concert at The Exchange Hall on Friday, September 13, 2024!

Dept debuted in July 2016 with his single called Easily, quickly garnering recognition for his eclectic fusion of R&B influence. The name Dept is a creative combination of ‘debt’ and ‘department’, reflecting his deep respect and gratitude for the artists who have shaped and influenced his musical journey. This was Dept’s third stop for his Asia concert tour following a successful tour in Taipei and Bangkok.

Malaysian singer Yuji surprised the audience as he opened the concert with Old Love, his hit single with fellow Malaysian singer Putri Dahlia. Dept then appeared on stage as he and Yuji sang their collaboration track Searching For Love, before being joined by AVOKID, a female singer-songwriter from South Korea to perform Closer Than Ever together.

Yuji exited the stage, leaving AVOKID and Dept to perform an array of songs, namely,  Winter Blossom, Like A Dream, and House Party. Dept shared the inspiration behind Winter Blossom. The song was written based on his friend’s experience who previously did not believe in love but changed after the said friend found love with the right partner. AVOKID and Dept  continued singing Beyond The Stars, Promise, Waiting For You and Moonlight. After this, both Dept and AVOKID performed their solo songs Love Song, and Over You, individually.

Throughout the concert, Dept took every chance to interact with the audience. He asked the audience to sing along during some parts of the songs he performed, which the fans happily obliged. He also had a special quiz session with the audience, where the lucky winners won his Goodbye 2023 platform album. Dept also learned some Malay words with the help of the audience. He was able to learn words like sedap (delicious) to describe the roti tisu (a flatbread dish that is thin and crispy) he had before the concert, as well as abang (brother) and saya sayang awak (I love you), which obviously received a hot response from the audience.

After a short break, Dept returned to sing a preview of two unreleased tracks for his upcoming releases, before performing the hit track Van Gogh with AVOKID. Dept then performed Autumn Breeze, a song that he wrote based on his previous relationship, 2 Years, Whenever It Rains, and Trust, where he went down the stage to get closer to the audience.

AVOKID returned to the stage to perform 500 Days, Umbrella and Summertime with Dept. Dept mentioned that he wrote 500 Days based on the movie 500 Days of Summer, that he learned of since he was part of a film club back in his college days.

Dept returned for an encore stage and he sang Maybe It’ll Be The Last Time. On his final ment, he thanked the Malaysian fans for their passionate support throughout the night and will cherish the love and support that he received. He then performed Winter Blossom and Van Gogh again with AVOKID to close out the show.

The concert was a true showcase of Dept’s musical diversity, and we look forward to seeing him perform in Malaysia again!
