[MALAYSIA] A Happy Ending for Lee Seung Gi’s VAGABOND VOYAGE

The Star Convention Centre was full last Saturday night with a mix of audience members that were young and old, male and female – which was a testament to the broad appeal of the person they were there to see: superstar Lee Seung Gi on his final stop of the 2019 Asia Fanmeeting VAGABOND VOYAGE tour.

The last time he was here was in 2012, when Seung Gi was already a celebrated actor, singer and variety show host with various awards under his belt. Now Seung Gi is a fully entrenched mainstay of the Hallyu Wave, having reached A-List celebrity status and bankability as one of the top-ranking brand ambassadors of South Korea. Last year, he was the recipient of the 2018 Grand Prize for the SBS Entertainment Awards.

Needless to say, his likeable persona shone through during his fan-meeting, where his fun, humble and game-for-anything character captured the hearts of his audience.

He began by singing “Because You Are My Woman”, a song that apparently began a “dating older women” craze when it was released in 2007. The crowd loved it!

The emcee for the night, Owen, came onstage to give AIRENs the opportunity to take pictures to their hearts’ content, and Seung Gi obliged by striking various poses for them. They sat down for a chat and after a throwback video to all of his past fan-meetings and concerts, Seung Gi noted that fans from all over the world are all passionate even if they express their passion in different ways. For example, with his Malaysian fans, he could really feel the heat! He was happy to find out that many AIRENs there had seen him when he came to Kuala Lumpur seven years ago too.

VARIETY OPPA

They went on to talk about Seung Gi’s stint as a celebrity carer for children on the show Little Forest. When asked how it was working with children, he said there were a lot of fun parts where the kids act unexpectedly. The only problem was that when it came to bedtime, they wouldn’t sleep! Even when he spent the day trying to tire them out, it didn’t work.

Owen commented that the children must be his fans too.

“They call me oppa but the age difference is 30 years,” joked Seung Gi.

He went on to talk about his series Busted, and asked if anyone watches it – because he knows that people either like it or don’t. For him, he enjoyed filming because he got to show the different colours of Lee Seung Gi.

When asked with whom he shared the best chemistry on screen, AIRENs immediately call out Sehun (EXO) – and Seung Gi agreed. He said they developed a close connection whilst working on the programme.

DRAMA OPPA

Candid pictures of Seung Gi on the set of Vagabond (his latest action drama series co-starring Suzy Bae and Shin Sung Rok) created a buzz with the audience. He noted that in one picture his hand is bandaged, not because he got hurt, but to protect it when he had to hold on to a moving car during the shooting of a stunt scene.

He warned AIRENs that they should not hang on to moving cars, because they can get hurt.

He also showed a photo of a meal that fans in Morocco (the shooting location) had sent as fan support to him on the set. He was truly surprised and grateful to know he had fans all the way there!

ACTION OPPA

Footage of Seung Gi in action on the set was shown, and he was seen performing his own stunts – one long scene took a full week to shoot, he commented.

Seung Gi took a moment to say that it is not possible to dodge a bullet at close range like he does in the scenes, and that AIRENs should not try to test the theory!

He also performed kissing stunts himself – and when asked to talk about it, he says that even though the audience might feel their heart flutter when they see the kiss, for him it is just work. AIRENs were dissatisfied with this answer, so he changed his response to “It’s great!” – which AIRENs also were dissatisfied with!

Lastly, he said, “I don’t remember!” and both parties agreed to leave it at that.

When asked if he is similar to his character Cha Dal Geon, he quickly denied it, saying that when he watches Dal Geon’s behaviour he feels suffocated and isn’t like him at all!

Seung Gi played several games including shooting hoops, making popiah (a local version of a spring roll) and a posing game – all for the benefit of some lucky fans who could interact with him on stage and receive signed posters.

CROONING OPPA

Seung Gi returns after a quick break and video messages from his co-hosts and co-actors from his various shows and dramas, with his songs “Return” and “Delete” – the latter of which he chose specifically to perform for the KL stop.

After thanking the crowd and expressing his sincere thanks and love to them, he ended the night with a medley of “Smile Boy” and “Let’s Go On Vacation” – crowd pleasers to say the least!
