[MALAYSIA] A Dream Perfect Experience with DPR Live in Kuala Lumpur

Last Saturday at KL Live, Kuala Lumpur was host to DPR Live, who is on the final leg of his ‘Coming To You Live 2018′ World Tour.

DPR (“Dream Perfect Regime”) is a collective of artists working in collaboration to provide an audio-visual experience that they want to be musically multi-genre and experientially distinctive.

Hong Da Bin, better known as DPR Live, is the rapper and singer of the group, and has been touring for over two months throughout cities in North America and Europe, finishing off with South East Asia and a final stop in Taipei in just a few days’ time.

Hong Da-Bin, aka DPR Live

Travelling with him are producer Cream (DPR Cream), music video director Christian Yu (DPR Ian), PD Scott Kim (DPR Rem) and Da-Bin’s cousin Jimmy, or Cline – all of whom appear on stage and are integral to the DPR Live experience.

The night started with a warm up by support artist DJ DaQ, who roused up the crowd with sounds and beats including songs ranging from Tropkillaz, Missy Elliott and Kendrick Lamar, to Latin club faves like “Despacito”, “Mi Gente” and “I Like It”, and a smattering of Kpop hip hop tracks with generous nods to Zico, and G Dragon and Taeyang.

Hustle Hard, Love Hard
Then DPR Live appeared, walking onto stage amidst screams from the crowd and launching straight into “Know Me”. The song originally featured Dean and was written for the fans which, as many songs for fans do, doubles as a solicitation to “love you right” – and the fans were SO willing to be loved right! He followed with several songs which were paeans to the romance and worship of their subject: “Cheese and Wine” and “Laputa” (a reference to the floating castle from the animation “Castle In The Sky”.

After a brief introduction, Da Bin lead into his next song on the proviso that, “if you know this song I want you to ****ing jump – and if you don’t know this song, I want you to ****ing jump!” – making it quite clear that he was here to have some fun and he wanted everyone in on it! The next songs included themes of escape, ambition and gratefulness, starting with a brief showing of “God Bless” before going into “Thirst” and then amping up the good vibes with the catchy delicious “Right Here Right Now”.

The Brothers Crew
In the next break, the crowd went crazy when they saw Christian Yu  onstage as he chatted to the crowd briefly while Da-Bin took a break. Whatever he was saying, the audience couldn’t get enough, and it was a delightful segue into the song “Action!” where Dabin asks “would you like to be part of my movie?”

“Playlist” by DPR Live

He followed with “Playlist”, his latest released single which was a definite crowd pleaser – and even featured a surprise duo dance outburst by Da-Bin and Christian during the delightful latin dance break in the track. It was the perfect time to introduce Cline, who brought the high of energy to a suitable close with his burst of nerd weeb dance enthusiasm!

It was obvious that the ease and brotherhood on stage from touring together and being a part of a collective of artists, was going to be integral to the DPR Live experience, one that so far was sexy and playful and warm – both performance-wise, and musically.

Then Da Bin went into the darker sounds of “Please”, about as gangster as it got for the night, before easing into the gentler, one could even say tender, “Jasmine” – a dreamy, lilting, ambient song that sounds like what it sings about: being in the throes and haze of desire for someone.

At this point Da Bin broke the mood to introduce Christian properly and talked about working with producer Cream, teasing a little part of the song they had worked on together, which we would be hearing later in the night. He continued with the songs “Is You Down” and “Text Me” – during which the fans held up a banner as part of a fan event. Christian even grabbed one from the crowd and took it onstage to feature with Da-Bin as he and the crew continually shot footage throughout.

Besides the musicianship and performance, the overwhelming feeling of brotherhood and camaraderie is evident, and all the artists onstage, from Da-Bin himself to the camera crew, DJs and guests, were there for each other and had one goal in mind: to make the crowd jump and go away at the end of the night having had an awesome live experience.

Never Stop
Da Bin spoke about how there was a time a few years ago when he felt held back – and that if the audience ever felt held back somehow, by their friends or family or even themselves, that just going for it was the only way forward. With these words of encouragement, he went into “To Myself”, a song about finding strength in oneself and the people who support you – in his case, Dream Perfect Regime. He finished with “Martini Blue”, catchy, fun and with that signature hoot that he had sung earlier, and returned with an encore before finally waving goodbye to the crowd.

DPR Live will be touring a few more cities and ending the Coming To You Live World Tour with the penultimate stop in Taipei in mid-December, and ending with a concert in Seoul in January.

Thank you to DPR Official and the organiser Kohai for inviting us to this experience.
