[INTERVIEW] Rising K-Hip Hop Artist CAMO On Collaborating With Big Names & Overcoming Setbacks

Listed as one of the seven Korean hip-hop artists to look out for this 2022 by HYPEBAE, CAMO is steadily making her mark in the music scene. Before officially embarking on her North American tour this August, The Seoul Story had a quick chat with CAMO as she shares more about her music and what’s next!

Q: It’s been just over two years since your debut. Do you have any messages for your fans who have been with you all this time?

CAMO: Hey guysss!! Thank ya’ll for the endless support and love. You guys really changed my life and I hope to make it up back to each and every person someday. New music coming soon!!!

Q: You debuted just as the world locked down but performed in Paris last year and will be touring North America very soon. Did you imagine that you would be here when you started?

CAMO: I honestly had no idea. I started music as a hobby when I was 21 as a freshman in college. I joined a hip-hop club/group and was just doing this for fun. There were a lot of negativity going on in my life at the time and I often felt vulnerable and insecure, for my music as well. Life is Wet blew up and I released Wifey, but a part of me still felt the same way.

Things really changed after I did my first show in Paris. The love and energy there was so pure and real, it allowed me to gain a lot more confidence in myself.

Q: You have worked with many artists such as JMIN, Simon D, Coogie and Leellamarz. As a soloist, how valuable are your working collaborations?

CAMO: Extremely!!  JMIN is one of the nicest guys I know and he’s always showed love and support. Simon D is a legend and he really puts me on to a lot of people. Coogie is also so nice and his songs are always great. Think we really mesh well on tracks. Leellamarz be hustlin hustlin. It never stops for him and I’ve always looked up to how much love he has for music. He’s probably one of the first artists who really gave me recognition and confidence in myself. Collaborations with other artists, photographers, videographers – anyone really all mean so so much to me.

Q: If you had to choose a cocktail or drink that expressed your musical style best, which would it be and why?

CAMO: Soju? Because it’s bittersweet? Lol idk 😛

Q: Is it true your name CAMO is from “CAsh MOney”? Could you take us through the process you followed of creating your stage name?

CAMO: I had a friend in college who came up with it for me. He literally just gave me my stage name, that’s crazyyy lol.

Q: How do you deal with setbacks? Are you a calm re-strategizer or do you push through with guns blazing?

CAMO: I think I’m prettty chill when it comes to setbacks. If there’s nothing I can do about it, fuck it and let things proceed.

Q: What’s the ultimate vacation? Rest and relaxation away from the hustle or immersing yourself in the bustle of a new city or culture?

CAMO: Rest and relaxation for sure hehe. Good food, a pool maybe and someone to enjoy it with!

Q: You have teased the fans about upcoming new music — can you share any spoilers with us? What can fans of CAMO look forward to for the rest of the year after you have finished your tour in August?

CAMO: New mixtape coming out soon. Dropping more tracks that I’ve ever at once so a lot of different vibes are coming real quick!!

Q: Your fans look up to you as a source of inspiration and solace. Do you have any words of encouragement for any aspiring artists?

CAMO: Just stay true to yourself, work hard and never let anyone put you down! Ya’ll can do it <3
