[INTERVIEW] POW Discusses ‘Boyfriend’, Latest EP, and 2025 Goals

The Seoul Story had the wonderful opportunity to sit down with five-member South Korean boy group POW who made their first comeback with their second EP, Boyfriend! Members JUNGBIN, YORCH, HYUNBIN, DONGYEON, and HONG discuss their title track and latest EP, as well as their goals for 2025, among others.

Q: Congratulations on the release of your second EP, Boyfriend! The title track is a remake of the 2007 song of the same name by Avril Lavigne. Could you tell us the inspiration behind this?

DONGYEON : I’ve loved this song since before I became a trainee—it feels like I grew up with it. I thought it would be amazing to infuse POW’s energetic style into Boyfriend, which is an iconic teen pop song from the 2000s. Combining it with our unique performance felt like the perfect fit. Being able to work on this project has been an immense honor.

Q: The group is credited for participating in the writing of Sunset. Can you each share what it was like to work on the song and how you collaborated together on it?

YORCH : I started writing this song after being inspired by the movie Her. If you look at the lyrics, you’ll notice some parts that connect to the movie. As the preparation stage for our comeback was long, we ended up refining the song more, and in the process, we adjusted the theme to reflect our feelings about our fans, POWER. The key theme of this track is based on sunsets. When this idea came to me, I worked with the members to develop it into the song you hear now.

JUNGBIN : Because the song reflects our sincere feelings, it allowed us to perform it in the most authentic way possible. When we are pre-recording or performing live, those emotions are deeply embedded in the song. Every time I sing or listen to it, it brings back the feelings and memories from when we wrote it.

Q: Were there any interesting episodes when filming the music video for Boyfriend?

HYUNBIN : We filmed the Boyfriend music video in LA, and although it’s not a place where it usually rains heavily, it poured on the day of the shoot. That completely flipped our filming plans upside down. During the shoot, the car doors wouldn’t open, probably because of the rain, and I remember yelling for help. Also, I naturally have curly hair, so the rain kept messing up my hair and our hairstylists had such a hard time fixing it. It’s a memory I’ll never forget.

Q: What is the biggest difference between this EP from your first EP?

JUNGBIN : I think experiences that we built is the biggest difference. The year between our first and second albums was a significant period for us. Our Favorite album captured POW’s identity and expressed it well, while the Boyfriend album reflects all the emotions we’ve felt over the past year, as well as the mental and personal growth each member has gone through.

Q: If you could dedicate one song from the new EP to your fans, which one would it be and why?

YORCH : If I could dedicate a song to our POWER fans, it would be Bae. The lyrics, “Thinking ’bout you bae every day,” perfectly express how I always have our fans in my mind.

HYUNBIN : For me, it’s definitely Sunset. We poured all our feelings of missing our fans into this song. While working on it together as a group, we realized just how important it is to find ways to truly connect with our fans and make sure they feel what’s in our hearts.

JUNGBIN : Sunset. Since we wrote the song thinking of our fans, it holds all the thoughts and feelings I’ve wanted to share with them.

DONGYEON : I’d say Sunset as well. It’s not about someone else’s story—it’s about us, the five of us, and the love we feel for our fans. That’s why it feels like the perfect gift.

HONG : I’d dedicate Sunset to our fans. The song has our our reflections and emotions that we hope can connect with our fans. It’s a heartfelt gift we can offer.

Q: What message do you hope fans will take away from this EP?

YORCH : With this album, I hope fans recognize that POW is a group capable of taking on a variety of musical styles. We debuted with a fresh, vibrant sound, but with Boyfriend, we’ve blended elements of rock and punk to showcase a new side of us.

Q: If you have the chance to collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

HONG : It would be a dream to collaborate with j-hope sunbaenim. I’ve been his biggest fan since I was young and look up to him. I would love to perform on stage with him.

Q: What is the next milestone that you individually want to achieve?

YORCH : My next goal is to reach out to more POWER fans. I want more people to listen to and fall in love with our music.

HYUNBIN : I want to expand my musical range. Whether it’s learning to play an instrument, writing lyrics, or composing, I’m eager to take on new challenges and grow as a musician.

JUNGBIN : I want to be recognized as an artist by both our fans and the wider audience. As a member of POW and as a singer, I hope bring more attention to our music and continue growing.

DONGYEON : I’d love to be more involved in the creative process for POW’s music. This time, I’d like to contribute to choreographing our performances.

HONG : My dream is to make POW a bigger artist. I hope one day you’ll hear our music everywhere, even just walking down the street.

Q: What is one word you would use to describe your 2024?

YORCH : One word for me is “Firsts“. 2024 was full of so many firsts for me. I released my first composed song, we held our first fan meeting in Korea, and we performed at New York’s Jingle Ball for the first time. It’s been such a meaningful year.

HYUNBIN : “Upgrade”. 2024 brought a bag of mixed emotions—happiness, frustration, and everything in between. Through it all, I feel like I’ve really grown in how I process and express my feelings. This year, I want to keep levelling up so I can meet our fans as the best version of myself.

JUNGBIN : I’d describe 2024 as a “Cocoon“. Like a cocoon preparing to transform into something beautiful, 2024 was about learning, growing, and experiencing everything we need to take the next step. It’s been a year of preparation for something greater.

DONGYEON : I’d call it “One Step“. 2024 was all about new experiences that helped me build my own foundation. Now, I feel ready to take the next step forward. By the end of 2025, I hope to look back on the choices I made and the path I took and feel proud of how far I’ve come.

HONG : “POWER”. 2024 was all about our fans. It was a year full of POWER, with their incredible energy and support.

Q: What do you hope to achieve as a group in 2025?

YORCH : I want POW to explore new styles of music that we haven’t tried before. I also hope more people take an interest in us and grow to love what we do.

HYUNBIN : I want us to release a lot more music. Through a variety of songs that reflect our unique style, I hope we can make our mark in the world of K-pop.

JUNGBIN : I want to resonate as artist, POW in every sense. Beyond individual members, I want us to be a team that can authentically express our story through our music.

DONGYEON : I hope that when people talk about POW’s music, they say it’s something they can always relate to. I want our songs to energize others.

HONG : I’m hoping to stay healthy and bring more happiness to POWER. I can’t wait to finally meet all our fans around the world and share more amazing moments together.
