TARGET follows the disaster that befalls Soo Hyun (Shin Hye Sun) after purchasing a second-hand item from a seller online. Fans of Shin Hye Sun will be thrilled to watch this talented actress showcase her acting chops in this action thriller film. Soo Hyun has just moved into a new apartment and is on a mission to save as much as she can on expenses. It has become more rampant for people to buy and sell their used items online, and a particular used washing machine catches Soo Hyun’s attention.
Online Deal Gone Wrong
Soo Hyun has to deal with supervising workers onsite, as well as an unnecessarily flirty boss who is on her case constantly. Adding to the stress of moving into a new apartment, she realises that her washing machine is not working any longer. However, prices of first-hand home appliances are getting more and more expensive as time goes by. This leads to Soo Hyun looking for cheaper alternatives online on a used goods platform, upon her friend’s suggestion.
The washing machine finally arrives, to Soo Hyun’s delight. Unfortunately, she realises that the washing machine is not working. After attempts to start the appliance, it becomes apparent that it does not work. However, she has paid the seller money for the washing machine. When she tries to confront the seller again, Soo Hyun finds out that he has already deleted his account.
Dealing with Frauds… Gone Wrong
Knowing that she has been scammed, Soo Hyun goes to extra lengths to find the seller. She is unable to accept the fact that her hard-earned money has been taken away from her this easily. Not wanting to let the scammer get away with it, Soo Hyun searches high and low for the culprit. Finally, she manages to find the seller after some time. Not wanting anyone else to fall for the scammer’s tricks, Soo Hyun comments under the seller’s posts warning everyone not to buy from him as he is a scammer.
The seller calls her to issue her a warning, but Soo Hyun does not back down and insists on standing her ground.
Little does she know her actions will lead to a disastrous outcome. It turns out that the seller is not just any ordinary scammer, but someone who is more dangerous than she thinks he is.
Soo Hyun’s life begins to fall apart rapidly over time. A series of disturbances occur following her confrontation with the seller, and Soo Hyun becomes more agitated and afraid for her life as days go by. Her co-worker, and friend, Oh Dal Ja (Lee Joo Young) stays by her side throughout. Along comes Detective Joo (Kim Sung Kyun) from the Cyber Investigations Unit. He first thinks that Soo Hyun’s case is just a simple case of fraud, but the harassment she suffers says otherwise. He works together with Detective Na (Kang Tae Oh), who genuinely receives Soo Hyun’s case eagerly upon first hearing about it.
Review
Looking for an action-packed movie to enjoy? Shin Hye Sun’s impeccable acting will get movie watchers hooked and gripping the arms of their seats. It is frustrating to watch the trouble she goes through, especially as it gets even more life-threatening.
The movie sheds light on the reality of purchasing used goods online. As frauds become more ubiquitous, it gets harder for the police to catch up and attend to every case reported. However, what if the case is not as simple as it seems? Director Park Hee Kon was conscientious when he researched the matter of second-hand shopping and its perils. From Soo Hyun’s point of view, the audience will get to experience and empathise with the experience of used goods shopping gone wrong. What if the situation gets too dangerous and severe? What does one do in that case?
