[FILM REVIEW] PROJECT SILENCE (2024)

Ready for a thrilling adventure? Project Silence, directed by Kim Tae-gon, is the latest Korean disaster film that had us gripping our seats from start to finish. Within the first 10 minutes, you’re already thrown right into the chaos — stuck on a collapsing airport bridge, surrounded by danger, with nowhere to run. This film promises non-stop action, intense drama, and moments that make you go “aww”. Let’s dive into what makes Project Silence a must-watch.

A Father’s Dilemma

We start off by being introduced to Cha Jung-won, a Security Bureau Administrator (if you have no idea what that title means, he’s basically the right-hand man to the next presidential candidate), Think typical, heartless politician, who will not stop at anything to advance his political agenda. That is, until he finds himself stuck in a thick fog that causes a massive pile-up on the bridge, with rogue military dogs escaping their cage and attacking the stranded survivors, including his teenage daughter, Cha Kyung-min. Jung-won is quickly forced into a situation at odds — where lives are no longer just a number, and choosing his daughter’s safety compromises everything he’s worked for so far.

Survival Against All Odds

As the weather worsens and the bridge becomes increasingly unstable, the survivors’ desperation mounts. Dr. Yang (Kim Hee-won), the head researcher behind the experimental dogs, possesses the key to survival from the vicious dogs. But he’s also probably the most annoying dude in this entire show — scared out of his wits and extremely selfish, willing to stop at nothing just to save himself. Now the survivors not just have to navigate the dangers of the collapsing bridge, avoid all signs of dogs, but also try to maintain solidarity amidst it all. Yes, that means no punching Dr. Yang in the face, or using him as dog bait. The whole movie feels like a race against time, with the characters fighting to stay alive before the bridge collapses. You also get a lot of jump-scares from the dogs. But we thought they were rather cute, actually.

A Daughter’s Determination

Cha Kyung-min is not just a helpless bystander. Resourceful, brave, and empathetic, she poses as a contrast to her father’s way more morally ambiguous character. Her character brings a lot of heart to the movie, and she does everything she can to help her father and the other survivors. Kyung-min’s determination and courage is inspiring, and makes her a standout character in this high-stakes thriller. The father-daughter dynamic adds a layer of emotional intensity that complements the non-stop action.

Review

This author at The Seoul Story is a night-owl, but she watched the screening Project Silence at a time where she’s not usually awake. Yet there was something about the show that robbed her of her sleepiness and allowed her to immerse in the show all the way. You know the feeling where you’re so focused on something, then suddenly you look at the clock and 6 hours had passed? Yeah. Project Silence had that magical time-bending ability.

As someone big on suspense, the most satisfying thing about this movie was how the suspense was really well-executed. Its like a roller-coaster ride that keeps you guessing at every turn, and there wasn’t a time where she could truly sit back and relax in her seat. Plus, the special effects are top-notch, especially the scenes involving the collapsing bridge and the ferocious dogs.

The film does a fantastic job of blending action with emotional storytelling, thanks to the strong performances of the cast. Themes of resilience, solidarity and familial love shone through from start to finish.

The movie is a must-watch if you enjoy thrillers with a bit of heart. It’s thrilling, emotional, and will keep you hooked the moment you get on that bridge. So grab some popcorn and get ready for a wild ride with Project Silence!
