[FILM REVIEW] On Your Wedding Day (2018)

A coming-of-age romantic comedy, ‘On Your Wedding Day’ is a film with a highly relatable plot and characters that will leave you reminiscing about the innocence and passion of your youth.

The film tells the tale of a bittersweet and heart-wrenching first love, spanning 10 years. Hwang Woo Yeon (Kim Young Kwang) is a high school student who has never been interested in studying. After his growth spurt, he spends his days fighting those who used to bully him when he was short. This all changes when he meets the new transfer student Hwan Seung Hee (Park Bo Young), and falls head over heels in love with her.

Woo Yeon even gives up fighting for Seung Hee, and upon seeing his determination to keep to his promise to her, she finally thaws out to him. However, a series of events forces Seung Hee to leave and break off contact, and their budding romance comes to an abrupt halt.

Later, upon seeing a photo of Seung Hee in a university brochure, Woo Yeon works hard and manages to enter the same university as her. However, their reunion isn’t the joyful and long-awaited one that he expects. As they mature and grow through college and their adult years, though Woo Yeon’s love for Seung Hee doesn’t change, a series of bad timing and ill-fated circumstances continue to keep them apart.

The simple and convincing plot is easily relatable, and the characters have realistic strengths and shortcomings that make them likeable and it becomes natural to empathise with them as they go through the ups and downs of life. There are many light-hearted and comedic moments in the movie, interspersed with scenes of varying tension and conflicts within the plot.

While the film may seem to be a little cliché in the middle, it is Woo Yeon’s growth and final realisation at the end that really puts the entire story into perspective and made the journey worth it. As the saying goes, it is not the results that matter but the journey; and it is the journey and process that leads to the results – or in this case, Woo Yeon’s final epiphanic moment. Kim Young Kwang’s spectacular portrayal of Woo Yeon through his joys, tears, and suffering were commendable and makes the character infinitely more likeable and charming.

For those who cannot resist the nostalgia of romantic comedies set during school-going years, ‘On Your Wedding Day’ is definitely a must-watch! We would like to extend our huge thanks to mm2 Entertainment for the invite! 🙂
