[FILM REVIEW] EXIT (2019)

When we think of disaster films; we think of movies about the world ending, or maybe movies in which zombies clamour to devour every living human in the world. However, “EXIT” will not only have you on the edges of your seats, but it’ll also have you laughing and crying along with the audience in the theatre!

Deemed “a new breed of disaster film that has never been seen before by filmmakers and the cast members themselves, the movie is sure to keep you wanting for more even till the end! Safe to say, it’s a film to be enjoyed by people of all ages.

While Yong Nam (Cho Jung Seok) and Eui Ju (Lim Yoona) captured the audience’s attention with their candid interactions, Yong Nam’s family members had everyone shrieking with laughter as well. Yong Nam’s mother Hyun Ok (Goh Doo Shim) and his father Jang Su (Park In Hwan) are especially hilarious, displaying their parental concern with utmost passion.

While a talented rock climber during his college days, Yong Nam has been unemployed ever since he graduated, now leeching off of his parents and sister. On the other hand, Eui Ju is a vice manager at a convention hall called “Dream Garden”. Yong Nam has always harboured a crush on Eui Ju and decides upon having his mother’s 70th birthday celebration at “Dream Garden” in the hopes of seeing Eui Ju again.

Disaster strikes in the form of poisonous gas, released into the city air out of spite. In order to save his family as well as Eui Ju and himself, Yong Nam has to get everyone out to the roof where they will all be able to get help from rescue helicopters. Unfortunately, trouble comes in the form of a locked door. With Eui Ju’s help, Yong Nam employs his honed rock climbing skills and attempts to save his family by climbing his way up the building from outside!

However, it seems like more obstacles lay ahead of Yong Nam and Eui Ju, who have to find their way to taller buildings in order to save themselves afterward. Both characters find themselves undergoing turmoil and stress as they attempt to climb their way to safety. The convenience of technology seems to be something the film highlights throughout the entire show, as the audience will find how smartphones and drones play important roles in bringing this chaotic pair nearer to their end goal.

Not only that, but movie-goers will find themselves leaving with something unexpected which will stay in their minds for quite a while. What is it? A clue is that it has something to do with the S.O.S signal which will be inherent throughout the movie!

“EXIT” is a movie that you would not want to miss watching in cinemas for sure, especially if you are in need of some drama and laughter at the same time.
