[FILM REVIEW] COBWEB (2023)

Directed by Kim Jee Woon, COBWEB revolves around the instances that occur during the re-filming of the ending of a movie called Cobweb. COBWEB features a stellar cast, consisting of Song Kang Ho, Lim Soo Jung, Oh Jung Se, Jeon Yeo Been, and Krystal Jung. The period black comedy-drama film is set in the 1970s, and is sure to have heads thrown back in laughter in the theatres.

Obsession Conquers All

Plagued by nightmares of what the ending of his film should be like, director Kim Yeol (Song Kang Ho) decides that he simply cannot move forward with his life unless he takes action. Fixated on creating a sensational film, Kim Yeol mobilises his filming crew and actors for one final time. It starts off calm at first, till issues unravel and the set is turned upside down because of all the chaos which ensues soon after.

Jeon Yeo Been plays Shin Mi Do, the person responsible for the finances of Shin Sung Film, the company that is producing the movie Cobweb. With her strong belief in Kim Yeol’s film direction, Shin Mi Do fully backs him up in his decision to remake the ending of his film. Lee Min Mi (Lim Soo Jung), Kang Ho Se (Oh Jung Se), and Han Yurim (Krystal Jung), are some of the few main actors who star in director Kim Yeol’s film.

Unfortunately, not everyone is keen on the idea of Kim Yeol recreating the ending for Cobweb due to a few reasons. As a result, the filming set turns into a state of pandemonium amidst the shooting. Kim Yeol scrambles to get everything in order, as best as he is able to. However, what happens when it seems like he will be unable to reach his goal?

A Web of Deceit

Director Kim Yeol is in a desperate situation where he has to shoot the new ending for his film behind closed doors. Not only that, but he ends up lying about the shooting only taking up one day. This leads to a series of unfortunate events, which has Kim Yeol questioning his own abilities. He just wants to prove everyone wrong and show them that he is as capable, or even more capable than director Shin (Jung Woo Sung), whom he had been working with for a long time up until the latter passed in an unforeseen accident.

Review

COBWEB is a movie that will have the entire theatre hall reeling with laughter. The comedic elements are pronounced, and it is easy for the audience to understand what is happening as things start to unravel, one by one. Why is the director so obsessed with giving his movie an entirely different ending? Why are some people particularly opposed to the new ending that Kim Yeol has created?

Jeon Yeo Been’s character as Shin Mi Do stands out the most, especially as the character that provides the most comic relief in COBWEB. She has the audience cracking up at her antics, as the filming seems to be getting to be getting closer to ending up in shambles as time passes.

Movie watchers have a chance to glimpse into what happens behind the scenes during filmmaking in the 70s. Nostalgia comes into play as black-and-white scenes appear to depict the cameras rolling as the actors get into their respective roles. The change in voice quality also lends a sentimental feel, reminding everyone that the movie is one that is supposedly filmed in the 70s. It is entertaining to hear the varying sounds and sights, coupled with the dramatic disaster that director Kim Yeol is facing.
