Amazon Bullseye is a light-hearted comedy film that brings together action, humor, and an inspiring story of redemption. Directed by Kim Chang Ju and written by Bae Se Young, this movie explores the themes of found family, cultural bridging, and the power of second chances.
A Journey Into The Jungle
Jin-bong is played by Ryu Seong Ryong, best known for his roles in Miracle in Cell No 7 and Moving. Once a former national archery team medalist, he faces the possibility of retrenchment in his company. Desperate to prove himself, he’s given one final chance by his company: journey to the Amazon and train an archery team. If the team manages to win a medal in the world archery championships, the company will secure a contract to secure the mining rights for gold.
After a harrowing near-death experience, Jin-bong finds himself in the jungle, where he meets Amazonian warriors—Sika, Iva, and Walbu—each possessing divine archery skills. Despite getting off on the wrong foot, he is eventually welcomed by their tribe and manages to convince the trio to return to South Korea. Together with an eccentric interpreter, Bbang Sik, they embark on a mission to win a gold medal. For Jin-bong, a win would give him the promotion he needs. And for the Amazonian warriors, putting their country on the map will help them stop the urbanisation of their native land.
When they reach Seoul, more unexpected scenarios happen. Will Jin-Bong be able to successfully lead his team to success? Will the warriors be able to overcome their fears and show their true skills?
Review
For one, Amazon Bullseye taps into South Korea’s recent dominance in the Olympic archery scene. The film features multiple scenes that had the audience on the edge of their seats rooting for the Amazonian team. As someone who has only watched clips of archery from YouTube, the film also does an excellent job explaining the basics of the sport.
While the cultural differences are sometimes exaggerated for comedic purposes, the film does seek to bridge these differences. It is refreshing to see non-Korean actors play significant roles in South Korean cinema and Brazilian actors Luan Brum, Igor Pedroso and J.B Oliveria fit in right alongside acting veterans.
The movie plot is also easy to follow and understand, making it a great choice for an after-work or weekend movie with your loved ones.
Family-friendly Joy
Amazon Bullseye delivers on its promise of a feel-good adventure that explores themes of redemption, unity, and found family. Whether you’re a fan of archery, or wish to get your mind off the stress of daily life, Amazon Bullseye is a delightful watch that reminds us of the beauty in unexpected friendships.
