[FEATURE] The Unique Origin Story of JBJ

In less than a year since their debut, JBJ has grown into a formidable group with a strong fanbase. Their first solo concert was sold out in less than a minute, and they’ve embarked on a successful Asia Tour. In 2017, they were also crowned a ‘Rising Star Award’ at Asia Artist Awards and ‘K-pop Singer Awards’ on Korean Culture and Entertainment Awards. However, what really stood out about JBJ is their strong connection with fans and the reason behind it is none other than their unique debut story.

Consisting of Jin Longguo/Yongguk (member of duo Longguo & Shihyun), Kwon HyunbinTakada Kenta,  Noh Taehyun (from Hotshot), Kim Sanggyun (from ToppDogg), and Kim Donghan, the members were originally trainees of ‘Produce 101 Season 2’ who didn’t make it to the top 11. They finished with ranks 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, and 29 respectively. Yet, despite their elimination, they have captured the hearts of fans who earnestly wanted to see them on the stage.

What started out as a fan-made teaser garnered the attention of fans who have been yearning to see the boys together. All six of them, along with rank 30th Kim Taedong. With fan-coined moniker ‘JBJ’ which stands for ‘Just Be Joyful’, the fan-created group caught the interest of Produce 101 viewers and even gained support from various Korean online communities. The idea quickly gained traction and it didn’t take long before it reached the ears of the boys – and their agencies.

Taking the feedback from fans to hearts, the seven boys and their agencies began meeting in early June 2017 to discuss the possibility of fulfilling the fans’ wish. When CJ E&M, the company behind Mnet, and LOEN Entertainment expressed their interest to help the boys after their debut, the path became clearer. Finally, the good news came on July 25th, 2017Fave Entertainment, a subsidiary of LOEN Entertainment, announced that everything has been set and they will manage JBJ for the next seven months, with the possibility of a contract extension if JBJ receives positive responses. Sadly, it was later reported that Kim Taedong wouldn’t be participating in the group due to an ongoing conflict with his agency, The Vibe Label.

Roughly two months later, the boys’ first variety show ‘Just Be Joyful JBJ’ began airing on Mnet M2 Channel, capturing their story and preparation towards their awaited debut date. And on October 18th, 2017, the boys finally debuted with an extended play titled ‘Fantasy’. Their official debut stage came a day later, when they performed for the first time on Mnet M! Countdown.

And this April, JBJ will be meeting Indonesian Joyful(s) through JBJ First Concert: Joyful Days in Jakarta. Be sure not to miss it, so you can spend a joyful night with your favourite “made by fans, for fans” boy group! 🙂
