[FEATURE] K-Dramas That Will Motivate You This March

We are now three months into 2020. Have you been following up on your New Year’s resolutions? If you haven’t, fret not! We have put together an inspiring watchlist to get you motivated to push through March.

Catch your favourite K-drama characters do their best in the face of adversity in these six shows — be it battling life and death in the operation room, roughing it out on the streets, or even staking one’s rightful claim in the Joseon Dynasty.

ITAEWON CLASS

In the colorful Itaewon neighborhood, Park Saeroyi (Park Seo Joon) runs a street bar with the ambitious dream of revenge. After being convicted for punching a bully, the newly released ex-con follows in his father’s footsteps and opens a street bar. Jo Yi Seo (Kim Da Mi), a popular social media influencer, joins the restaurant as a manager. Follow the two, along with their motley crew of friends, strive towards success while faced  against a mighty foe — the large food corporation Jagga, whose CEO’s son is the bully that caused his jail sentence. 

Fun facts: 

  • BTS V produced and wrote “Sweet Night” for the Itaewon Class OST. This track is entirely in English. 
  • Itaewon Class is based on the webtoon of the same name. The writer of the webtoon also wrote the drama. 
  • Park Bo Gum makes a cameo in the show’s finale.

HI BYE, MAMA!

Cha Yu Ri (Kim Tae Hee) has lived the life of a ghost for five years, watching over her husband Jo Kang Hwa (Lee Kyu Hyung) and their daughter, Jo Seo Woo (Seo Woo Jin). Given a second chance at life, Yu Ri undergoes a reincarnation project and reappears in front of her remarried husband and child for 49 days. Except, her husband’s personality is not what it used to be. 

Fun Facts: 

  • This is Kim Tae Hee’s first acting role since 2015. 
  • Kim Tae Hee’s on-screen daughter is actually played by a male! He was chosen due to similarity in features to Kim Tae Hee along with his stable acting skills. 
  • Seungkwan from SEVENTEEN loves this show so much, he changed his Weverse account nickname to “Hi Bye Mama”!

HYENA

To survive in a dog-eat-dog world, two rival lawyers with high-class clientele tear apart anything that stands in the way of their ambitions. Meet Jung Geum Ja (Kim Hye Soo): a true hyena armed with the strongest survival instincts, she chases money and success regardless of what it takes. Occupying the top 1% of lawyers with her is Yoon Hee Jae (Ju Ji Hoon), an elite lawyer that is highly confident in his abilities. Possessing a brilliant mind and an inflated ego, he is an expert at maneuvering the law to serve his needs. 

What happens when these two meet in court? 

Fun facts: 

  • Ju Ji Hoon also stars as the crown prince in the hit Netflix zombie series, Kingdom.
  • This is veteran Kim Hye Soo’s first TV acting role in almost four years.

SKY CASTLE

For the families living at Sky Castle, an exclusive residential community that’s home to South Korea’s elite, their children’s success means everything. Follow the lives of these four women as they strive towards ultimate success and raising  their children like princes and princesses. 

A satirical drama that examines the materialistic desires of the upper class in South Korea. A tragic accident in this luxurious castle throws these four families into a tangled web of revelations, betrayal and drama. 

Fun facts: 

  • This drama is SF9 Chani’s first breakthrough acting role. He plays the sweet Woo Joo in the show.
  • Fans of hit web series A-TEEN can see Kim Dong Hee star as a school boy again in this series.

HOSPITAL PLAYLIST

Five doctors, whose friendship goes back to their days in med school, come together at one hospital as colleagues in the VIP wing. Except, they used to be in a band together back in 1999! A story brimming with nostalgia, friendship and the turbulence of adulthood — this series touches hearts with a sense of warm sentimentality and shared experience. 

Fun facts: 

  • Screenwriter Lee Woo Jung and Director Shin Won Ho previously worked on the Reply Series (Reply 1997, Reply 1994 and Reply 1988). 
  • Jung Kyung Ho, who plays the ice cold Kim Ju Hwan, actually nagged Director Shin Won Ho day and night to participate in this drama. 

Kingdom

KINGDOM: SEASON 2

Fans of the first season rejoice — Season 2 is out and about with a greater, more devastating spread of the outbreak. With the plague advancing across several provinces, no one is safe.  But the infected are not the only monsters in Crown Prince Lee Chang’s (Ju Ji Hoon) way as he fights to protect the kingdom. With allies secretly plotting against the Crown Prince, a tense political battle underscores the deadly path of survival. Will this turmoil mark the end of the Joseon dynasty or would the Crown Prince be able to bring the nation back to its former glory? 

Fun facts: 

  • Kingdom is Netflix’s first original Korean series.
  • Jun Ji Hyun makes a cameo in this season.
  • Season three is in the works!
