2020 is over and a new era of fashion will dawn upon everyone this year. Whenever a new Korean fashion trend hits the streets, it hits hard. K-fashion grew even more popular worldwide in 2020 — more K-pop groups made their official debuts in the United States. As more people become more aware of the existence of K-Pop groups, a lot more eyes gravitate towards the various fashion trends that these Korean idols are bringing along with them.
2020 was the year of crop tops, enthralling floral dresses and eye-catching hairstyles. As the seasons change, trends are bound to come and go. K-pop fans are very likely to latch onto the latest styles seen on their favourite idols.
Let’s take a look at the amazing fashion trends that Korean female idols set over the seasons.
Winter : Blazers and Thigh-High Boots
The cold certainly means that you have to keep warm, but that does not mean you cannot do it stylishly. MAMAMOO Moonbyul, GFRIEND, IZ*ONE and Dreamcatcher were all decked out from head to toe in matching suits during their comebacks.
Sleek and powerful suits add a touch of charisma to the groups’ dance choreographies. For the everyday humans, a matching pair of blazer and pants make a great workwear outfit as well.
Another timeless trend during winter is a casual shirt tucked into a pair of loose jeans. Throw an oversized blazer over the outfit for a smart casual look! It is more convenient to have a few of such pieces to mix and match with instead of having to put together an entirely different outfit everyday.
You can never go wrong with skinny jeans and long comfortable coats during the harsh winter season. Keeping warm is a top priority during the cold, especially when humans are more prone to getting sick. Skinny jeans are a common staple in every idol’s wardrobe, and with a long open-buttoned coat — one is still able to show off her figure even during the winter season.
Spring : Tweed Blazers and Mullets
Cropped tweed jackets made a comeback during spring. While some may have thought that they have become outdated, Korean girl groups made them seem more and more attractive. Cropped tweed jackets in pastel colours look utterly cute and flattering when paired with a matching pair of pants or mini skirt. OH MY GIRL and Jennie can be seen in some of these looks.
And who said that only guys can pull off mullets? GWSN Miya shows everyone that girls can do it too! For ladies who may want to pull off an androgynous look, such a haircut may help with that!
Summer : Romantic Florals and Two-Toned Hair
Summer is the season which reminds everyone of the beach, sand and sun. The warmer temperature begets a change in trend as more idols will switch to more comfortable and cooling wear. TWICE brought back the bohemian style with romantic ruffled dresses for their MORE & MORE comeback promotions, eliciting wonder from fans at the stunning image they presented.
Jessi and MAMAMOO Hwasa usually don baggy sweatpants and crop tops the season — an outfit combination which is popular in the States as well. While the sweatpants do not show much, they do sit at the hips snugly. Paired with a cropped top, the outfit is bound to accentuate the hips and draw people’s attention to one’s slim waist and hips. Athleisure is really fun and you can don colours without looking out-of-place! Sweatpants and sweater is an often-seen combination around us and a popular airport fashion trend that idols have been sporting.
A hair fashion trend which took the world by storm during this season has got to be Jennie’s two-toned blonde and black hair. When BLACKPINK made a comeback with How You Like That, Jennie caught everyone’s attention with her face-framing blonde highlights. While the rest of her hair was black, her fringe was blonde and somehow — it looked amazing! Videos of people attempting the hairstyle went viral on YouTube and TikTok, as others tried to see if they could pull it off as well.
Fall : Bell-Bottom Pants and Crop Tops
When GFRIEND made a comeback with MAGO, their retro concept had everyone excited. Not only was the song catchy, GFRIEND also had fans marvelling at how they pulled off bell-bottom pants in the music video. While bell-bottoms have been seen as outdated for years, it seems like it is coming back at full blast now.
A pair of good bell-bottom pants should be paired with a pair of shoes with height. As these pants tend to be long, it is better to wear heeled shoes. In GFRIEND’s case, we can see that the stylist had them wear black boots. As these black boots are not flashy, the outfits do not look like they are over-the-top on the girls.
2021 will be another year for fans to discover new fashion trends. Who knows what the future may bring? Tri-coloured hair? Asymmetrical shirts? Or will fashion trends from the older days make a comeback? What if the mohawk makes a comeback as well?
These are just speculations and mere whimsical thinking, but no one ever knows if a person influential enough will ever get everyone to the point where they want to try out something new — AGAIN! Let’s hope that 2021 will not only give rise to more fashion trends, but that it brings everyone more happiness and health in the months to come!
