[FEATURE] 5 K-drama Inspired Outfits to Touch Your Date’s Heart This Valentine’s

We can all agree that if we are in need of a romantic and heart-pounding fix, we can always count on K-dramas to provide. Be it in a high school, office or fantasy setting, they almost always leave us wanting to experience the love story and all the cute dates they go out on.

But K-dramas are not just great for planning out your ideal date — they are also filled with stylish outfits that you can take inspiration from. With Valentine’s Day coming up, here are some of our favourite styles from K-dramas that you can recreate to wow your date:

1. Hotel Del Luna — Flirty & Fun

Aside from the stellar plot and great chemistry between the co-stars, Hotel De Luna is also well-known for the gorgeous dresses that the female lead, Lee Ji Eun (IU), dons throughout the show. While it is hard to pinpoint our favourite look of hers, we feel that this floral dress is perfect for a Valentine’s Day date. While the dress is feminine and sophisticated, the yellow hue adds a fun, retro personality to the look. Lee Ji Eun’s hairstyle parted and curled hair gives a fresh innocent feel, and the long earrings add a graceful touch. Finish off with Lee Ji Eun’s signature red lip, and you are good to go!

2. Her Private Life — Matchy & Comfy

A heart-fluttering show about a dedicated fan’s double life as an art curator and fansite, this K-drama is the epitome of a dream-come-true scenario for idol fans.

Above is our favourite couple-look that can be easily emulated for Valentine’s Day ourselves. Match denim pants with your significant other, and decide on a colour scheme for your tops. Here, the leads Sung Deok-Mi (Park Min Young) and Ryan (Kim Jae Wook) have layered cream-coloured neutrals in different styles.

Sung Deok Mi has a great combination that is great for a day out. The cropped knit accentuates the waist while the flowy, oversized cardigan elongates the body while cinching in at the wrists so that it does not overwhelm the frame. Not to mention, lightweight knitwear has been a trend permeating into Asia, and layering them in a comfortable and relaxed style is the perfect way to incorporate them into our daily wear. Pair these neutral colours with golden accessories, such as earrings, to complete the look.

On the other hand, Ryan looks dashing in his oversized khaki trench coat. While a coat can make an outfit overly formal and heavy, the exaggerated lapels and loose cut style of this coat create a relaxed fit that is great for windy days. It also elevates the simple white tee and jeans combo into a more fashionable outfit without much effort.

3. Melting Me Softly Fresh & Simple

Praised as a heartwarming drama with overwhelming chemistry between the leads Ma Dong Chan (Ji Chang Wook) and Go Mi Ran (Won Jin Ah), Melting Me Softly has many (including us) craving for a romance just like theirs’. For those that enjoy a date outdoors, or a day-out in theme parks, then these two lovebirds’ fashion will be right up your alley!

We are in love with Go Mi Ran’s spotted top — it is understated, but still adorably feminine with the ruffled sleeves and comfortable. The blue denim contrasts the top well and is great for any activity you have for the day. Complete the look with a simple crossbody bag so that you can carry around chocolates or any gifts your date has prepared for you.

Ma Dong Chan looks equally charming in his oversized olive shirt. The loose, boxy silhouette of the shirt gives the appearance of a fuller frame. He also stylishly matched his inner shirt with his pants, which is an easy trick to create harmony between all your pieces even if they are made of different materials.

4. Search: WWW — Colourful & Bold

As expected of a tvN series, Search: WWW is a highly praised K-drama that gives an insight into women that chose their careers over their love lives. Given the premise, you can expect more mature renditions of daily wear, but do not fret! It’s not all drab and dull — as you can see, Bae Ta Mi (Im Soo Jung) is dressed in bright pops of colour!

It can be scary to experiment with prints and colour, especially with the likes of orange and blue but Ta Mi is an example of why we should go beyond our comfort zone! Here, the orange plaid works well with blue as they are complementary hues. To bring the look together, match the orange by brushing on orange-toned blush and popping on a brick coloured lip. If you are feeling particularly adventurous, see-through bangs are a great way to frame your face and create an innocent, fresh look.

5. Touch Your Heart — Glamourous & Eye-catching

A drama highly anticipated by fans of the 2016 K-drama sensation of Goblin, Touch Your Heart delivers more than just superb on-screen chemistry and romantic storyline. The outfits are also a feast for the eyes!

For those looking forward to a fancy date night at a hard-to-book restaurant, a nude dress never goes wrong. We love how this midi-dress (see above) hugs Oh Yoon Seo’s (Yoo In Na) figure perfectly, and draws eyes with silver threads woven into the body of the dress. The sheer sleeves also carry lace detailing, accentuating a feminine look. With such a visually interesting dress, a simple centre-part hairstyle and minimal earrings balance the overall look. Pop on a flush of pink blush and lips as a finishing touch.

Males can consider going for the classic bowtie with a two-piece black suit. Such a dress code is suitable for all formal occasions and will match well with any outfit that your date decides on. Kwon Jung Rok (Lee Dong Wook) has on a single-breasted suit jacket, which we recommend as it can be buttoned at formal locations, and unbuttoned at the bar or other informal places to project a relaxed look.
