For the first time ever, IU stopped by Singapore for her 10th Anniversary Tour Concert <이지금 dlwlrma> at The Star Theatre. Fans rejoiced when they heard word about the amazing singer-songwriter coming down to Singapore. IU, otherwise known as Lee Jieun, is a multi-talented singer who started her career when she was a young teenager. Having gone through ups and downs in life, the latest tour served as a movie reel to show everyone what she’d gone through for the past ten years in the K-entertainment industry.
Uaenas (IU’s official fan club name) waited with bated breath for IU’s arrival on the stage the moment the lights were dimmed. When she finally appeared, the crowd went wild and cheered, giving her the warmest welcome they could!
It’s not a concert, but a movie!
Fans were in for a treat from the moment they stepped into the theatre. IU had promised everyone there that the show would be very exciting and special. There was even a live band as well! She admitted that she didn’t know that she had many fans in Singapore and was very sorry that it took her so long to come!
She told the audience that she would be showing them the last ten years of her life as movies of different genres throughout the concert.
Some of the songs she performed were “The Red Shoes”, “Cruel Fairy Tale”, “dlwlrma” and “Every End of the Day”.
IU mostly spoke in English to the fans, which endeared her to them even more for going the extra mile.
“Sing-Uaena(s), you guys are so passionate. I’m so surprised! I’m not sure which song my Sing-Uaena(s) will like the most because it’s my very first time in Singapore but I think the next song will be just as exciting for you guys. Maybe?”
She was eloquent and her English was perfect! Everyone appreciated that IU thought of how most of her fans in Singapore would not be able to understand her if she only spoke in Korean.
She sang “Good Day” next, impressing everyone with her clear voice and perfect pitch. Of course, everyone was waiting for the climax where IU usually sings the three high notes and they certainly weren’t disappointed when she hit each one of them!
Living life like a romantic comedy
The next part of the show had IU singing about love and feelings. She told everyone that if it were a movie, it would be a romantic comedy or melodrama. Among the songs performed were “Between the Lips”, “Friday” and “Meaning of You”.
She was touched by the fact that the fans sang very well in Korean, saying that she got goose bumps. Acknowledging how difficult it is for people to sing in a foreign language they’re unfamiliar with, she then sang “爱情”, a Mandarin song originally sung by Karen Mok.
After the performance, her expression suddenly became more serious.
“I was so nervous. I hope this was a good present for you guys. The next song actually wasn’t in my setlist but I prepared it. I’ve been thinking about this one recently. This song has been a great comfort to me since the moment I met it. I really hope this song will reach the person I really miss.”
IU changed her mic before singing “A Gloomy Clock”, a song made by SHINee’s Jonghyun who featured in it as well. The atmosphere turned a little heavy as everyone was reminded of Jonghyun’s death anniversary which was coming up in a few days’ time. The song was a reminder for everyone that just because someone puts on a smile on his or her face everyday doesn’t mean that they’re not battling their own demons on the inside.
Next, she performed “Lost Child”, “23”, “Glasses” and “Zeze”.
The moment ”BBIBBI” started playing, everyone cheered harder than before. It was IU’s latest single released in commemoration of her 10th anniversary, aimed at accepting and respecting each other’s personal boundaries.
Bidding goodbye to the IU of the past
IU admitted how she was a little sad because she couldn’t convey everything she wanted to in her songs since they’re all in Korean. She also divulged more about how she has changed as a person.
“When I was young, even though I’ve received so much love, I used to pay so much attention to the people who disliked me. I think that’s why I used to write lyrics that are so sharp and dark. But that’s changing now. I have become a person who can focus more on love. Seeing you guys today, it makes me want to write more songs about love and comfort. And… I really love myself. I’m in a mood like this! You guys make me a better person.”
The segment was fun indeed, with IU dancing with her marshmallow-headed back-up dancers during “Marshmallow” and “Boo”. They looked so cute, making everyone squeal as they ran around and danced to the songs with IU.
IU revealed that it’s the last time that she’d sing “Marshmallow” and “Boo”, which was why she brought the marshmallows over as well. She was sad, but she thought that it was time to leave behind the cute and young IU with her marshmallows.
She had the marshmallows take turns saying thank you, making everyone burst into laughter as they heard each one of them speak in various squeaky and tinny voices.
Among the songs performed for that segment was “Palette”, “Merry Christmas in Advance” and “Last Night Story”.
Dressed in a beautiful white gown for “You & I”, IU looked ethereal as she sang for Uaenas. She sparkled brightly amidst the dark backdrop.
During the encore, she sang “Through the Night” and “Dear Name”. For the last song, she allowed everyone to record her on their phones as keepsakes.
IU had successfully taken Sing-Uaenas on a journey and shown everyone a glimpse of her life for the past ten years of her career through the songs performed, and the VCR cuts shown on the big screens. Everyone had the time of their lives that evening, in the company of the ever-so-talented IU. It was a grand experience for the fans who were able to welcome her for the first time ever to sunny little Singapore.
