Having watched Koo Kyo-Hwan’s incredible performance as the main antagonist in the hit zombie blockbuster Colony earlier this year, our expectations for Reawakened Man were sky-high before even stepping into the cinema.
Boasting a string of acclaimed productions this year — including Colony, Once We Were Us and We Are All Trying Here, there is no doubt that Koo Kyo-hwan has cemented his status as a phenomenal rising star. Together with a stellar cast featuring Shin Seung-ho, Kang Ki-young and Kim Sia, the anticipation for this film was over the roof.

Reawakened Man opened with an intense sequence that instantly hooked the audience: a group of thugs driving down an isolated road to dispose of a seemingly dead body over a ridge. We soon find out that the body belonged to Seok Hwan (played by Koo Kyo-hwan), where he returned home one night only to be attacked by a group of strangers and killed.
Seok Hwan was an ordinary job seeker who could not seem to land a job despite his age. Despite facing a relentless string of failed interviews, Seok Hwan keeps trying his best, backed by the unwavering support of his younger sister, Ye-rin (played by Kim Sia), and his loyal best friend, Young-ha (played by Kang Ki-young).
Miraculously, exactly 72 hours after his death, Seok Hwan was able to open his eyes and come back to life as if nothing happened, with no recollection of his own death. Seok Hwan quickly realises that no matter how many times he dies, he will always resurrect three days later. “Don’t worry. Even if I die, I’ll come back to life!”

Better yet, with every subsequent death, he returns with physical strength and supernatural abilities much stronger and more powerful than the previous time. This anomaly catches the attention of a mysterious man, Black (played by Shin Seung-ho), who begins relentlessly hunting him down.
Black possesses the terrifying power to manipulate minds and force others to act against their will. But when he discovers that his psychological grip has no hold on Seok Hwan, the narrative takes a dark, twisted turn. Blocked from controlling Seok Hwan directly, Black pivots to targeting his vulnerable inner circle instead.

One of the highlights we loved about the film was the heartwarming friendship between Seok Hwan and his best friend Young-ha. Young-ha stuck by his side even when he had nothing to his name — neither a job nor supernatural powers. Even when bizarre changes started happening to Seok Hwan which he could not comprehend, such as him suddenly getting entangled in a car chase between Seok Hwan and mysterious thugs, Young-ha remained fiercely loyal and tried to protect Seok Hwan as much as he could with his limited human capacity.

Similarly, the bond between Seok Hwan and Ye-rin serves as an authentic and relatable portrayal of modern sibling dynamics. While Ye-rin initially puts up an aloof front, bluntly voicing her disappointment over his employment struggles, her deep affection for her brother shines through in subtle, tender moments. She believes in Seok Hwan more than anyone and remains a strong anchor for him despite all the obstacles they faced throughout the movie.

Amidst all the tension, the screenwriters brilliantly injected comedic touches that genuinely had the cinema erupt in laughter so many times. Despite his bleak circumstances and all the trauma he endured, Seok Hwan’s humour and fierce protective instincts thoroughly win the audience over. Witnessing Seok Hwan evolve from a defenseless target into an extraordinary hero who can protect his loved ones made his character development an absolute joy to watch unfold.
Overall, Reawakened Man is an exceptionally entertaining blockbuster that kept us thoroughly hooked. Filled with twists and turns that left the cinema gasping, it truly was a captivating piece of film from the start to the end!
