BLACKPINK debuted on August 8 2016 with members Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. BLACKPINK has an impressive endorsements portfolio, from an online shopping platform to smartphones to luxury fashion brands like Louis Vuitton. With a collective Instagram following accumulating to a whopping 99.6 million followers, the girls are a household name among K-pop fans.
It is not surprising that for a group with so much fashion presence – the first thing you’d notice about BLACKPINK is their fashion style. All four girls have a distinct style and it is evident in every BLACKPINK comeback so far.
While we’re anticipating their pre-release track, “HOW YOU LIKE THAT” at 6PM (KST) tomorrow, what better way to relive the glory of our favourite fashionable quartet than a style breakdown of each era?
WHISTLE | BOOMBAYAH
The two debut title tracks are vastly different from one another in genre to showcase the ability of the quartet. However, there was one fashion accessory that was highlighted in both – chokers.
In the “BOOMBAYAH” music video, a predominantly neon colour is visible in Jennie’s and Rosé’s VETEMENTS long sleeve tee and sock ankle boots respectively in the music videor. In the stage styling, the girls usually wear either tees or shirt paired with pleated skirt and heel laced up boots.
Notable accessories styling would be fishnet stockings for Jennie and Jisoo, suspender and stud necklace on Rosé and chain necklaces on Lisa.
“Whistle“, a more guitar-driven pop composition still maintains the edgy yet feminine style but leans heavier towards the latter. The stage version features the girls dressed in long sleeve blouses or understated street style in the form of bomber jacketa and fitted high-waisted shorts.
In the music video, you get visual treats in the form of Jisoo and Lisa in quirky dresses ranging from up and coming designer brand to high end brands such as LUCKY CHOUETTE and SAINT LAURENT. A personal favourite during this era would be a blink-and-you-miss-it scene of Rosé wearing FLEAMADONNA’s spangle high neck top and crocodile-effect mini skirt.
PLAYING WITH FIRE | STAY
In the same year, the girls did a comeback with double title tracks yet again ; “Playing with Fire” and “Stay”. Similar with their debut, both tracks are very different from each other which are also reflected in the styling choices.
Dresses from high end brands such as Alexander McQueen and Coach, printed blouses from Balenciaga and Dodo Bar Or could be seen in the music video and comeback stage. Pleated skirts, knee-high sock and high heeled boots are a permanent fixture in the styling.
In this era, Lisa shows off her duality with an eye-catching orange-lined MA-1 bomber jacket and a chic open shoulder fur coat.
While “Playing with Fire” has a flashy fiery styling befitting of the track’s name, Stay on the other hand is muted and understated in terms of styling – similar to the ballad tune itself. In the music video, most of the girls wear casual tees paired with checkered or denim jackets and skinny jeans.
The stage styling though is different. The girls are dressed in tweed jacket, fleece jumper, Peter Pan-collared mini dress, faux fur – what seems a wonderful walk of memory lane of young adults living in Manhattan’s Upper East Side (Gossip Girl, anyone?)
AS IF IT’S YOUR LAST
The girls made a comeback with a fun upbeat song, “As If It’s Your Last” in the summer of 2017. Dressed in preppy outfits for their stages yet still maintaining their trademark styling of knee-high socks, pleated skirts (but in plaid!), boots (but higher platforms!), the comeback was an instant hit with the public
The music video has more fun in styling the girls with healthy doses of blings – Jennie’s Gucci pearl necklace, Rosé’s and Jisoo’s Jealousy dangly earrings and the dangly pearl embellishment underneath Lisa’s Heritagefloss satin snapback. Not to forget, the choker’s comeback in the form of heart for Jisoo!
DDU-DU DDU-DU
Sparkles, sequins and frills were all on board for BLACKPINK’s “DDU-DU DDU-DU” comeback.
Pretty dresses are abundant in the music video – Rosé’s REEN by THORNTON BREGAZZI red floral lace dress, Jisoo’s Chanel iridescent wool tweed black dress, Lisa’s Natasha Zinko lace-up maxi dress and Jennie’s showstopper Dolce & Gabbana rainbow-striped chiffon gown.
Moving away from the usual black high-heeled and neon coloured boots, a variety of interesting silhouette of heels are worn by the girls. Saint Laurent’s Freya Rose sandals, Y/PROJECT spiral sandals and draped denim boots, Balenciaga’s knife pumps – to name a few.
KILL THIS LOVE
Tomb Raider meets K-pop is the styling theme for 2019’s hit comeback “Kill This Love”. BLACKPINK was styled in utilitarian fashion trend of tight monotone crop top and jacket by Me Dic Al, leather gloves (Chanel, of course), buckled belts, Necessary Evil’s cargo pocket belt and of course more kick-ass boots!
As usual with BLACKPINK, the real styling treats would be shown in the music video instead of the stage.
Rosé rocked Mihara Yasuhiro’s biker jacket while in another scene she wears Versace’s Nasro draped mini dress. Lisa donned a cool half skirt half denim (aptly called punk pant denim) by ALYX in one of the scene and amplifies her coolness in another with Celine’s embroidered puff ball bustier dress and eyepiece from Givenchy.
Jisoo was stunning (the bejewelled headpiece!) in a Givenchy metallic pleated gown in one scene and back to being feminine yet powerful in a Versace’s floral tulle dress. While Jennie, like always, is killing it in YCH’s black bodysuit and a Chanel silk white top.
For their upcoming “HOW YOU LIKE THAT” comeback, the girls will be definitely decked in trendsetting outfits. But we are curious about what else is in store for us with regards to BLACKPINK’s fashion for this entire era!
Until then, there’s plenty more of wonderful styling for you to live vicariously by rewatching BLACKPINK’s previous music videos and stages.
