[FEATURE] Five Times Lee Sungkyung proved she’s a Vocal Fairy

As if her incontestable talent in acting and natural skill in modeling isn’t enough to deem her as an all-around artist, Korean sweetheart Lee Sungkyung, has proven time and time again that she possesses one more ability that would get her fans totally in love with her—that is, her singing prowess.

Sungkyung’s gift of music isn’t a secret to those who have been following her ever since she debuted as an actress in 2014. Once in a while, the beautiful lady gets out of her strictly-acting zone and shows her musicality— blessing the ears of her fans with her clean high notes.

To share this beautiful sensation caused by Sungkyung’s honey-sweet voice, we enumerated five instances wherein she was able to prove, without a doubt, that she’s got more than just a knack in singing.

1. Her true colors shining through~

For the Korean-dubbed version of animated movie Trolls, Sungkyung’s voice was used for the female lead character, Poppy, and idol-actor Park Hyungsik, lent his voice to the film’s male lead character, Branch.

Also through this project, the two were given the chance to record the Korean version of the famed song True Colors, as part of the OST of the said movie. The perfect combination of the sweet voices of the two, in addition to the effortlessly touching message of the song, resulted in perhaps one of the most beautiful duets ever recorded.

2. Queen Fairy of Masked Singer

Sungkyung blessed us with two pleasing performances when she joined popular Korean TV show, King of Masked Singer as Blue Crab Lift Flower.

The first one was her solo stage where she sang Cho Yong Pil’s I Wish Now It Will Be That, a nostalgic Korean ballad which Sungkyung gave justice to with her emotional arrangement of the classic song.

Her second performance on the show was a duet with her opponent during that episode, South Korean singer Huh Gong. They sang IU and Seulong’s Nagging, which was a little upbeat compared to the mellow songs Sungkyung usually sings. Her performance in the duet was a fresh addition to her list of stages and a solid proof of her ability to sing along to almost any music genre.

3. Queen Kyung taking on Queen Bey

A performance that many are unaware of, Sungkyung channeled her inner Beyoncé on stage when she satisfyingly performed Queen Bey’s hit song, Love on Top, during the 2015 MBC Drama Acting Awards.

The actress daringly challenged the song’s notorious ascending high notes—and she did not disappoint a tiny bit! Even complete with a choreography, Sungkyung made sure to own Love on Top during the performance—and she did it quite effortlessly.

4. The Driving Disney Princess

Sungkyung is known to be a huge fan of Disney’s movies and musicals, and she doesn’t fall short in showing just that!

A post she uploaded in her Instagram account even went viral—it was a video of her singing along to Aladdin’s A Whole New World, all the while driving to wherever she was about to go during that time.

Her charming singing voice, in addition to her relatively good English pronunciation, made the cover all the more endearing, leaving all of us wishing for a longer version of her singing the song—

—which actually already happened! Before her IG post in 2017, she already previously sang the song as a duet with Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, in an episode of the TV show Radio Star in 2016.

Another short Disney song cover Sungkyung did was with Frozen’s Love is an Open Door, which she sang while filming for another South Korean TV show, Happy Together. After listening to the clip of Sungkyung singing the song from the famous animated movie, Yoo Jaesuk and the other hosts of the show were surprised with her beautiful singing voice, eventually praising the actress which caused Sungkyung to go all shy. Cute!

5. It’s About Time she sings in a drama…

Sungkyung wasn’t given the chance to merge and showcase both her singing and acting skills in any of the dramas she previously starred in—until she was casted as the female lead of 2018 fantasy drama, About Time, where she took the role of a musical actress.

In the series, Sungkyung got the opportunity to finally, fully show her musical prowess through a number of scenes which demanded the use of her singing voice. And as expected, Sungkyung once again delivered what is expected of her and more.

One of her most memorable performances in the drama was when she was practicing the song, I Am Who I Am, with her fellow musical actors and actresses. She was in the middle of a group of vocalists who served as her backup singers. Notable was how Sungkyung easily and perfectly hit the high notes of the song, while still making the viewers experience both the satisfaction and the tension from the scene.

She levels this up as she later took on the stage and performed the same song—this time with a choreography necessary for a musical show. The flawless harmony between her and her fellow musical actors and actresses was able to bring out the triumphant feeling that the scene wanted to draw from the viewers—after Sungkyung’s character, Michaela Choi, was finally able to successfully perform her piece on stage.

***

There is no other way to describe Lee Sungkyung other than being the embodiment of a total-package artist. Her acting stints have always been praiseworthy, earning her the right to be called a versatile actress. Her talent in modeling, like her captivating looks, just comes so naturally to her.

And to top all of these, the existence of her musical prowess seems to already be an undisputable fact—as clearly shown in the videos above.
