[SINGAPORE] Akdong Musician brings joy & laughter to fans during ‘AKMU STUDIO’

Siblings Lee Chanhyuk and Lee Suhyun of Akdong Musician graced fans in Singapore with their presence last Friday. They are a duo under YG Entertainment‘s label, alongside the likes of other label mates BIG BANG, WINNER, iKON, BLACKPINK and more. Akdong Musician, also known as AKMU for short, debuted two years ago after winning the second season of K-Pop Star in 2014. And finally, in 2016, they have decided to drop by Singapore to shower fans with their wholesome voices!

All’s Fair in Love and… Sibling Rivalry…?

It was refreshing to see a pair of siblings interacting on stage. The camaraderie between Suhyun and Chanhyuk was what made the duo really entertaining. Banter and casual harmless insults were thrown at each other during their talk time. Chanhyuk told everyone that the both of them were currently studying Chinese and English. He even spilled that Suhyun only has good pronunciation when it comes to English, implying that she wasn’t yet fluent in the particular language as a whole. Fans laughed at the banter which took place, applauding the pair’s efforts in appreciation. They all knew how tough it is to learn new languages.

When Chanhyuk asked how everyone at the venue got to know of AKMU, a majority replied with “Kpop Star!”. The siblings looked visibly surprised and unsure, that even Chanhyuk had to ask whether it wasn’t because of the “YG Effect” that everyone got to know of their appearance!

While no one waits for them at the airport back in South Korea, the situation was really different for them when they reached Singapore. They were both warmly greeted by fans at Changi Airport, which made Suhyun questioned whether the crowd was waiting for an idol group. But no! Those fans were certainly fans of them!

Sing along with AKMU!

With Christmas just around the corner, everyone was itching for a good old cover of a classic Christmas tune. AKMU revealed that they will be singing carols during upcoming tours and festivals. Suhyun then belted out her own rendition of “All I Want for Christmas is You”; her mellow and soulful voice hitting all the right notes. The audience really wanted to hear more though…

And so they started taking in song requests from fans. Unfortunately, most of the songs requested were unfamiliar to the pair. The MC then suggested that they cover Colbie Caillat and Jason Mraz’s “Lucky”, to fans’ delight. It went without saying that everyone started singing along with the siblings. Who wouldn’t know the lyrics right?

Next, Suhyun and Chanhyuk started to sing their own rendition of fellow label mate Taeyang’s “Eyes, Nose, Lips”! It appeared that everyone had been waiting for it, judging by the excited squeals and shouts from the audience. Their crystal-clear and crisp voices, accompanied by music by the live band, did not fail to appease fans, that’s for sure!

Of course, the last song was also a song which fans could sing along to! It was Tamia’s “Officially Missing You”! The harmony between both siblings made the cover a pleasant auditory experience for the crowd!

Interaction with Fans

During “Give Love”, Chanhyuk and Suhyun decided to get off stage to interact with fans in the audience. They walked up the aisle during the performance, singing to fans as the camera followed them.

Chanhyuk even casually hooked an arm around a fan’s neck when she asked for a selfie, to everyone’s surprise! Suhyun could be seen with a banner, probably given to her by a fan. They looked so happy, enthusiastically singing as they waved to fans in the auditorium.

The duo then introduced each member of the live band, who had provided music for that night. Chanhyuk also introduced himself again, to which Suhyun petulantly asked, “What about me?”.

They then performed other songs, which included an all-time favourite, “200%”! After an encore of “How People Move”, and “Artificial Grass”, it was time for Suhyun and Chanhyuk to say goodbye to fans.

Special thanks to IME SG and Three Angles Production for granting us coverage for the entire event!

It had certainly been a fun and entertaining night for both fans and musicians, and we hope that AKMU would come down and visit Singapore again in the near future! 🙂
