[FEATURE] Listening to DAY6: Letting Gravity Pull The Sweet Chaos Into Place

K-Pop upholds a reputation revolving around experimental good music, addictive beats, creative music videos, catchy lyrics, and a variety of charismatic groups and personalities. People have seen and heard of trendy nine-member girl groups and rainbow hair-colored boy bands, but not much know that actual bands also exist in this music scene. Those who do, like My Days, have had the time of their lives for sure.

DAY6’s debut in September 2015 brought more light into the dawn of a new day for the K-Pop industry. During this time, most of the big names were having comebacks and doing promotions, like BIGBANG, SNSD, EXO, SUPER JUNIOR, F(X), and SHINee. This was also the year when gazillion of acts made their debut and would be eventually become one of the most successful groups and well-loved by many, like TWICE and SEVENTEEN, as well as groups that were created from reality shows, like iKON. A lot more has happened in 2015, which Billboard coined conclusively as “the industry’s most creatively satisfying year of all time given the striking releases that included experimental collaborations, curveball genre explorations, and heartfelt concoctions.

The emergence of a band was an interesting twist to cap that year. People have been stuffed full with almost everything K-Pop has to offer, and just when they thought it’s over, DAY6 comes to put more onto the table. And it’s not just the typical “K-Pop sound” either; theirs were an altogether new flavor to the musical taste buds, and members Jae, Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil, and Dowoon made sure to present a different face of K-Pop music. They are also the first alternative rock band to debut under JYP Entertainment.

Preceded by the legacy of rock bands like F.T. Island and CNBLUE, the band rose to fame slowly but surely, instantly captivating the audience with their debut song ‘Congratulations’, the song that cemented their music style onto the K-Pop music scene which then became the key element of their charisma as a “superband”. They also proved their versatility and outright passion for music when they produced a plethora of much-adored songs through their ‘Every DAY6 Project’, an album series with two songs released every month. Four years, a couple more albums and one Band Music Award later, here they are promoting their fourth studio album titled ‘The Book of Us: Entropy’ and touring the world for the second time with “DAY6 World Tour ‘GRAVITY’”.

Despite how entropic the K-Pop world and music scene can be, DAY6 has the ability to make emotions fall into place or pinpoint the sugar rush or heartbreak with just their vocals, drum beats, guitar strums, piano keys, and of course, the band’s heartfelt lyrics. This is why My Days, their fans, can’t get enough of them and their music. Of course, while it’s their heartfelt songs that captivate listeners, it is their dynamic personalities and harmony as a group that makes people stan. This is the sweet chaos of being a DAY6 fan.

All of their tracks are real gems to jam to, but here are some of their fan-favorite songs that just simply say (or sing) it all.

Let’s start with the band’s so-called specialty: heartbreak. Even in the very beginning, DAY6 has already given us a taste of pain with ‘Congratulations’, a song about being replaced and not seeing it coming. Combined with an equally bitter telltale music video, it’s not surprising why it made such a lasting impression to listeners. It’s sad and angsty, which are everything you will be if you found out your girlfriend is already dating someone else after saying you two “need some time apart.”

Relationships indeed are hard work. DAY6 understood especially the need for communication. ‘I Wait’ is a lover’s cry for his partner to simply speak up, to tear down the walls and let him in. And then ‘Shoot Me’ tells us that while it is important to communicate, we should still be mindful with our words ’cause they can hurt like a bullet bullet bullet.

For when it’s hard to say goodbye so you just sing it: DAY6 got you covered. From ‘Goodbye Winter’ to ‘You Were Beautiful’ to ‘I Smile’, just pick the one that suits your emotions best. But perhaps the one song that will always have a special place in a My Day’s heart is ‘Letting Go’, simply for its honest lyrics, sorrowful sound (yes, even with Young K’s rap), and the message behind it.

Look back but don’t go back. For a comeback, DAY6 decided to go retro and gave off the perfect nostalgic vibe with ‘Days Gone By’. Don’t be fooled by its upbeat sound! The lyrics are mildly melancholic, very reminiscent, and gently confrontational, reminding us of the reality that some people leave and never come back and we have no choice but to move on.

One last heartbreak: loneliness. There’s nothing worst in the world than to feel like nobody cares, like ‘Nobody Knows’. There are times when the pain of loneliness becomes too much to bear when you’re ‘All Alone’ in every sense of the words. These are DAY6 songs to voice out the pain and to let you admit: ‘I Need Somebody’.

But enough sadness! Let’s talk about love. DAY6 does write the most painful songs, but they also produce tracks that will just make you all giddy inside.

For when you feel that sugar rush crush, pick one: ‘I’m Serious’, ‘Like That Sun’, ‘Beautiful Feeling’ or ‘Chocolate’.

For when you are just so utterly in love: ‘When You Love Someone’.

For when you completely lose it because of love: ‘Sweet Chaos’.

For when you want to know how love works: ‘How To Love’.

More than these things, DAY6 have always been advocates of living life to the fullest. They will make us ‘Dance Dance’ with them until we feel like having ‘The Time of Our Life‘. Best of all, Jae, Sungjin, Young K, Wonpil and Dowoon want those who are young and who were once young to know that your world is out there only for you, to not be afraid, and to remember that nothing can bring you down, so ‘Live Your Life’!

Calling all PH My Days! Come have the time of your lives and be part of ‘DAY6 WORLD TOUR: GRAVITY in Manila’ happening on the 23rd of November 2019, Saturday, 5:30 PM, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. General Admission tickets are still available via TicketNet.
